Maybe Disney executives don’t talk to a lot of X-Men fans, as the latest rumor from scooper WDW Pro at Pirates and Princesses claims the executives were taken off guard by the streaming numbers for the animated series. The numbers must be impressive because the rumor claims it has the executives jumping to create a live-action series that would appeal to the hungry audience.

“The rumor is that Disney execs were caught off guard with the Disney+ viewership for the old 90’s X-Men animated series,” said WDW Pro. “They are considering / developing a live action series with a huge budget that aims for a similar vibe. If Marvel goes with a live cast featuring the dozens of X-Men characters and proper special effects, it could easily sail past The Mandalorian’s budget.”

If we take the rumor at face value, the executives are considering – or already developing – the series based on the success of the animated series on Disney+. So what do the executives make of X-Men: The Animated Series? The new trailer they released at the end of October 2020 offers us some hints.

As the scooper WDW Pro suggests, it seems the marketing team responsible for the X-Men trailer at least has picked up on the social issue themes of the show. The added wording reads, “For those who are different / Some want war / Others fight for peace”. Of course, many of us rewatching the 90’s cartoon today are heavily influenced by a factor of nostalgia, but there are reasons the audience loved it in the first place. Many of the scenes in the animated trailer are heavily similar to what we’ve seen in the live-action movies made since, which can be seen in the scenes between Magneto and Professor X.

Hopefully, the studio is also picking up on a lot of the other reasons X-Men: The Animated Series is great. It had moments like the characters using their powers for everyday tasks, like a normal person would. The series was full of winks to the comics, so fans who followed multiple mediums were satisfied. It had creators who were clearly having fun with the project. Let’s hope they make sure to replicate some of that magic as well.

If this rumor is true, the idea is still very much in the early stages. The executives at Disney have a hungry audience they want to feed, but that doesn’t mean they have the right team ready to make that happen. It will be interesting to see where they go with this, especially as Disney is working on bringing the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

x-men days of future past

Previously, there have been rumors that some of the X-Men may appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In this scenario, instead of suggesting that the X-Men and Avengers have always existed in the same universe, Doctor Strange could pull some multiverse magic to make that happen. There have also been discussions around who could play the mutants in this new iteration, particularly around Magneto.

With a possible Disney+ television series, the animated series from the 90’s finally easy to watch online, X-Men officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and everything that’s been happening in the comics lately, it’s a good time to be an X-Men fan.
