Liam Neeson The Ice Road

The trailer for Liam Neeson’s Marlowe is here. Along with looking like a great detective noir thriller, it also happens to be Neeson’s 100th movie. At this point, Neeson has played everything from a Jedi to a man with a particular set of skills, and he doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.

Liam Neeson stars as the classic Raymond Chandler character Philip Marlowe, who takes on the case to find the ex-lover of an heiress in the 1930s. Along with Neeson, the film stars Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Colm Meaney, Ian Hart, Alan Cumming, Danny Huston, Daniela Melchior, Seana Kerslake, and Francois Arnaud. Neil Jordan directs the film with a screenplay by William Monahan.

If Liam Neeson’s Marlowe ends up being a successful film, this could very well end up being the next big franchise for Neeson. There are numerous novels featuring the character, so there would be plenty of material to adapt. Plus, there are always original mysteries that screenwriters can come up with if they have a detective as their main character.

In fact, Liam Neeson isn’t even the first actor to play Philip Marlowe. There have been numerous film, television, and radio adaptations featuring the character or variations of the character, with the novel The Big Sleep being the most common adaptation. Some notable actors to take on the role in the past include Humphrey Bogart, Danny Glover, James Caan, and Robert Mitchum.

However, it has been a pretty long time since we’ve seen a film adaptation of the character. Liam Neeson’s version will be the first Philip Marlowe film since 1978’s The Big Sleep, which starred the aforementioned Robert Mitchum in his second crack at the role. As long as they can nail the hard-boiled, noir tone (which Neeson obviously can), there is definitely potential here for future movies.

Liam Neeson in Marlowe

If not, Liam Neeson has plenty of projects planned after Marlowe to begin his climb toward the 200-movie mark. For now, the only upcoming project that Neeson has with a release date is the film Retribution, which is set to come out on June 2, 2023. Retribution is a remake of the Spanish film El Desconocido about a bank executive driving his kids to school who finds out that his car will explode if he stops.

Retribution will be directed by Nimrod Antal with a screenplay by Andrew Baldwin. Along with Liam Neeson, the film stars Jack Champion, Matthew Modine, Embeth Davidtz, Arian Moayed, Daniel Grave, Emily Kusche, Noma Dumezweni, and more. Following Retribution, Neeson has five other films in various stages of production including Charlie Johnson in the Flames, In the Land of Saints and Sinners, Thug, Cold Storage, and the next entry to The Naked Gun franchise (via Deadline).

In the meantime, we can see Liam Neeson in Marlowe in a little over a month. The film is set to hit theatres on February 15. Stay tuned for more news on all of Neeson’s upcoming projects and when they’ll be released.
