If you feel like it’s been too long since you’ve seen Leonardo DiCaprio on the silver screen, we don’t blame you, but we’ve also got some great news! According to Variety, Martin Scorsese‘s Killers of the Flower Moon is slated for an October release. To be more specific, October 6 will show us a limited theater release before you can see the Western crime drama anywhere on October 20, 2023.

And is there really a more iconic duo than Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio? By now, the two have worked together on several projects together, including Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Audition, and of course, the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon. If that’s not exciting news, then maybe we should get into the rest of the cast for the upcoming flick, which will have its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Killers of the Flower Moon will not only star Leonardo DiCaprio, but will boast an all-star, Oscar-winning ensemble cast, including Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), and Brendan Fraser (The Whale). It’s also worth noting that Jesse Plemons and Lily Gladstone will play significant roles in the film, which will surely make for an interesting awards season.

Considering that DiCaprio and Scorsese’s films have racked up a total of nine Academy Awards (with 31 nominations), it’s safe to speculate that they’ll only be tallying off more accolades with Killers of the Flower Moon.

The film itself is a Western crime drama, and an adaptation of author David Grann’s third non-fiction book, entitled, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. The story follows the investigation of the murders of dozens of wealthy Osage Indians who died under violent or suspicious circumstances during the early 1920s. Leonardo DiCaprio portrays Ernest Burkhart, William Hale’s (Robert De Niro) nephew, and he’s conflicted by his sense of loyalty to both his Osage wife and his powerful uncle.

One of the main sources of drama in Killers of the Flower Moon is the fact that Burkhart is caught in the middle of Hale’s plot to kill off the Osage tribe to gain control of their oil and wealth. Hale’s plan involves convincing his nephew to marry Mollie Kile, a native Osage woman, to increase his odds in claiming the land from the tribe. In other words, Leonardo DiCaprio is playing another duplicitous role under the direction of Martin Scorsese.

This could rival his own performance in The Departed in regard to its many layers of ambiguity and deception.

Scorsese has collaborated with Leonardo DiCaprio on five feature films since 2002, and with De Niro on nine feature films since 1973. This is the kind of familiarity that all but guarantees a powerhouse performance for all parties involved. If past work is considered prologue, we’re going to witness a harrowing tale of collusion, deception, bigotry, and power by the likes of which we’ve never seen before with Killers of the Flower Moon.

For those of you waiting for the wide theater release, you should mark your calendars for October 20, 2023, because you’re not going to want to miss this one. If there’s one thing we know about Scorsese and his past collaborations with Robert De Niro, and Leonardo DiCaprio, their careers only improve with age. Killers of the Flower Moon should further cement their already decorated legacies in filmmaking.
