The trailer for The Last Voyage of the Demeter teases an epic Dracula story.

From the Robert Pattinson-led Twilight saga films to the recent television series Interview with the Vampire, vampires have long been a topic of film and television. 1931’s Dracula still serves as one of the first and most prominent films in the horror genre and cemented the figure in horror iconography. According to a recent trailer and IMDb, the upcoming horror film The Last Voyage of the Demeter is offering up a new journey involving a uniquely aquatic take on the classic villain.

The trailer for The Last Voyage of the Demeter was released on Thursday, April 13. Much like the trailer for the recent Nicolas Cage vampire film Renfield, it begins innocuously enough. The audience is introduced to Liam Cunningham’s The Captain, Corey Hawkins’ scholar, and other patrons embarking on a journey on the ship The Demeter.

Once they embark, a number of curious and escalating events begin to occur. When something viciously mauls all of the livestock on the ship, they begin to believe that they aren’t alone. They soon realize that they could all be in grave danger, trapped on a floating coffin in the middle of the ocean and in the presence of a bloodthirsty creature named Dracula.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is set to hit theaters on August 11, 2023, over two decades after its initial conception. Bragi F. Schut wrote the initial screenplay back in 2002 based on the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. The original screenplay focused on a single chapter from the novel entitled “The Captain’s Log.”

Unfortunately, The Last Voyage of the Demeter entered production hell and it ended up in what felt like an impenetrable bog of production quicksand. Originally attached to director Robert Schwentke, other directors whose names were subsequently attached to the film at one point or another included Stefan Ruzowitzky, Marcus Nispel, David Slade, and Neil Marshall. Some big-name actors who were rumored to be on board or in talks for the project at one time or another include Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen and Gandhi star Ben Kingsley.

It wasn’t until 2019 after languishing for almost two decades that it was announced that Amblin Partners had obtained the rights to The Last Voyage of the Demeter. They announced that André Øvredal would direct the film. Øvredal has directed a number of films in the horror genre, including the films Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

In January 2021 The Last Voyage of the Demeter received a new draft of its script written by Zak Olkewicz and announced that The Walking Dead actor Corey Hawkins would star alongside David Dastmalchian, Liam Cunningham, Aisling Franciosi, Javier Botet, Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapičić, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Woody Norman, Martin Furulund and Chris Walley.

Despite an extremely long production process, it seems like the journey of The Last Voyage of the Demeter has been fruitful. Fans should look out for this latest Dracula film this summer on August 11, and maybe avoid any long sailing trips after watching.
