Kristen Wiig has been cultivating a new comedy series for AppleTV+ called Mr. and Mrs. American Pie, which is bringing in some high-level talent. Laura Dern is an executive series for the new comedy and is looking for a good part. Allison Janey has joined, and Leslie Bibb of Iron Man fame has been cast in a big role. Josh Lucas and Ricky Martin also round out this already impressive cast. Now, a legendary television star will be making her way to the series. That legendary star is none other than Carol Burnett. Burnett became one of the biggest household names when her groundbreaking variety show, The Carol Brunett Show, rose to prominence in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Carol Burnett is set to star as the antagonistic character of Kristen Wiig’s character. Mr. and Mrs. American Pie follows Maxine Simmons, a woman who is doing her best to break into the Palm Beach high society. Only, it appears as if she is not the right fit. Simmons must figure out who is allowed in, why are they allowed in, and who makes these rules. Burnett will portray Norma, who is the grande dame of the Palm Beach high society. Norma may present herself as the “high and mighty” leader of his organization, but she has her own secrets that would prevent her from also getting a seat at the table.

Carol Burnett became one of the earlier female stars of television. She rose to prominence through her wonderful stage performances, which led to an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. From there she would become a series regular player on The Garry Moore Show. Based on her deal with CBS, she went on to create the hugely successful The Carol Burnett Show. Throughout her time on television, Burnett garnered 23 Primetime Emmy nominations and six wins. She has been heralded as one of the first women to break through in television, as her variety show was one of the first of its kind. Though she has appeared in several television shows, films, and more in recent years, Mr. and Mrs. American Pie will be the first time that she will be a series regular since her time on her own variety show.

Mr. and Mrs. American Pie is being produced by Apple Studios and created by Abe Sylvia. Sylvia will serve as the showrunner for the series as well. He was also the producer for the hit Netflix series, Dead to Me. Tate Taylor is set to direct the series, The series is based on a novel by Juliet McDaniel of the same name. Tate Taylor is set to direct the series and serve as executive producer. The production staff has to be overjoyed to land a generational talent like Carol Burnett.

Mr. and Mrs. American Pie became a straight-to-order series in February for the streaming platform. The show is in the pre-production stages, so we will likely not see it until early or mid-2023. Kristen Wiig and Carol Burnett should make quite a fantastic team. We can’t wait to see how this show turns out.
