Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is promising to showcase Knuckles the Echidna, one of the most beloved characters in the franchise. Fans already knew that the sequel would be giving us a look at Miles “Tails” Prower since the character made an appearance at the end of the last movie. But now with the knowledge that we will also be getting the feature film debut of another fan favorite, everyone has been eagerly anticipating the first look at the character. And now, we have seen exactly what he will look like.

Check out this on-set photo that captures the stand-in models for both Knuckles and Sonic:

There is no question that the movie design of Knuckles is pretty much a perfect representation of the cartoon character. Considering that the original design of Sonic for the movie was so disliked that it ended up getting changed, it looks like the movie series is leaning fully into the more classical cartoon designs of the characters. That seems to be working for audiences since the first film was a big success. And it certainly seems like the series knows that fans want to see more of these characters in the franchise make their way to the big screen.

We do not know exactly how prominent Knuckles is going to be in the plot. In fact, the only cast members that have been confirmed are James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Ben Schwartz who is returning as the voice of Sonic. As of now, it does not look like Jim Carrey is coming back in this entry as Dr. Robotnik. And we do not have confirmation on who will be doing voice work for Tails or Knuckles. There have been rumors that actors such as Jason Momoa, Chris Hemsworth, and even Dwayne Johnson could be providing voice work for the film. Any of those actors would be a major get for the movie and would help draw even more attention to the sequel.

With no confirmation that Jim Carrey is going to be back (or may just show up as a cameo), we wonder whether or not Knuckles will be positioned as an antagonist at first. That was his role when he first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as a rival to Sonic. However, he eventually became an ally and friend to the hedgehog. Could that be his narrative trajectory in the new sequel? It would certainly make a lot of sense to introduce him as a source of conflict but then have him turn to the side of good by the film’s ending.

We will simply have to wait and see just how the movie decides to utilize the character of Knuckles, but at least this behind-the-scenes photo shows that the movie is taking his design seriously. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently scheduled to premiere in theaters on April 8, 2022. So in just a little under a year, we will get to see how Knuckles plays into this newest installment in the franchise.
