It seems like ages since it was announced that Rian Johnson’s wildly successful who-dun-it, Knives Out, would be getting not one, but two follow-ups. News broke back in March 2021 that Netflix had acquired the rights to Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3 in a whopping $469 million deal, with both sequels bringing back Johnson in the director’s chair and Daniel Craig as Private Detective Benoit Blanc. Variety was the first to report in January we’d see a return to the world of Knives Out sometime this fall, and today The Hollywood Reporter has announced an exact date as to when Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery aka Knives Out 2 will be premiering on Netflix.

According to THR, Knives Out 2 is scheduled to drop on Netflix on December 23rd, 2022. It will reportedly release in select theaters on an undetermined date. The sequel will see Benoit Blanc (Craig) travel to Greece, where he becomes wrapped up in an entirely new mystery with a bundle of fresh characters portrayed by Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn and Madelyn Cline.

Although plot details for Knives Out 2 are rather vague at this time, the previous film centers on a renowned crime novelist who (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, and Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s disfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death.

The first Knives Out was an absolute hit with critics and viewers alike. Released back in 2019, the star-studded flick still sits on Rotten Tomatoes with an astounding 97% fresh rate from critics and 92% from viewers. Rian Johnson even earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. In addition, the movie was a box-office smash bringing in a whopping $146 million domestically, and a world-wide total of $311 million. With numbers like that, a Knives Out 2 was all but given. At one point, there were multiple studios eyeing the rights to the franchise. In fact, there was a frantic bidding war between several studios and streamers, but Netflix eventually came out as the winner.

Considering the amount of cash Netflix dropped to acquire the rights to Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3, the network is undoubtedly expecting both follow-ups to be massively successful. It has been known for quite some time the streaming giant has been looking to launch a franchise of their own to rival those coming out of major studios like Warner Bros., Disney and Universal. Although they’ve had some notable success with original features such as The Old Guard, Bright and Project Power, they appear to be altering their strategy in scooping up an existing property. We’ll find out if their gamble pays off later this year.

Knives Out 2 premieres on Netflix December 23rd, 2022, with a theatrical date yet to be announced. The sequel stars Daniel Craig, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn and Madelyn Cline. Rian Johnson directs from his own script.
