Kirsten Dunst made a lasting impression as the radiant Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s trilogy of Spider-Man films. For a particular generation, she will always remain Peter Parker’s number one love interest. With all of the crazy casting news we have heard about Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man 3 – the latest being the return of Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus – it seemed like the surprises were over. That is not the case.
According to Jeff Sneider over at Collider, Kirsten Dunst will be appearing as Mary Jane Watson in the newest Spider-Man installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Add this to all the other casting announcements and it is undeniable that Spider-Man 3 – they really need to tell us the title of this movie so it doesn’t sound like we are always talking about that other Spider-Man 3 – is going to be a multiversal extravaganza.
The only information we do not have regarding the casting of Kirsten Dunst or these other surprising additions is how critical they will be to the overall plot of the third Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man movie. There is a very good chance that some of these appearances might end up being nothing more than glorified cameos. Granted, it will still be exciting and heartwarming to see these actors return to these roles, but all of the news hoopla surrounding them might end up being equivalent to very little screen time.
It would be great to see how Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst ended up in their Spider-Man universe. Their last appearance left them on a happy note, but have they stayed together since the end of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3? Or has their relationship fallen apart like Peter B. Parker’s in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse? Or are things between Mary Jane and Peter better than ever and have they had a kid? Could their universe be where we meet May “Mayday” Parker a.k.a. as Spider-Girl? The possibilities are endless right now.
No matter how Kirsten Dunst is utilized in this new Spider-Man movie, it is still going to be a genuine treat to see her play Mary Jane for what is likely the last time. Her performance in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy still holds up to this day. She has gone on to have a prolific and extremely affecting career as an actress. there is no doubt that she has only gotten more talented as the years have gone on. Getting to see her seasoned professional take on the character of Mary Jane Watson will be worth the price of admission alone.
With all of these casting announcements, we are going to be chomping at the bit to see Spider-Man 3. The movie is currently filming and it is likely that Kirsten Dunst won’t be the last big casting surprise to come out of the production. In fact, we know that’s the case. With everything being revealed about this new Spider-Man film, we wonder what surprises the finished movie will have in store for audiences when it releases in December of next year.
