Over the weekend, Kate Winslet needed to make a trip to the hospital after slipping and falling on the set of the upcoming biographical drama Lee in Croatia. Deadline reports that Winslet’s reps played down the incident, saying that the Avatar: The Way of Water star was only taken to the hospital “as a precautionary measure required by the production.” The rep likewise insisted the Oscar-winning actress will be back on set and filming this week.

The complete nature of the injury hasn’t been revealed, so it’s too soon to assume much beyond what Kate Winslet’s reps had to say. On one hand, from what we know about Lee, it doesn’t sound like the kind of action-packed feature that would normally have a good potential to lead to serious injuries. On the other, a significant portion of Lee takes place during the events of World War II.

In Lee, Kate Winslet will play the late Lee Miller, who began her time in the spotlight as a fashion model but would later became a photojournalist; one of the most important photographers of the Second World War. Among other noteworthy events Miller’s camera recorded the Battle of Alsace, the liberation of Paris, and the nightmare of the Nazi concentration camps at Dachau and Buchenwald. The same day Adolf Hitler committed suicide, Miller was in his Munich apartment with photo collaborator David Scherman, where the latter took photos of Miller deliberately dirtying Hitler’s bathroom and bedroom.

Last October Kate Winslet made the point to tell Deadline that Lee is not a biopic because, rather than her entire life, the film will cover “the most interesting decade” of Miller’s time; 1938-1948. Lee is the feature directorial debut of Ellen Kuras–who previously worked with Winslet as cinematographer on 2004’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind–from a script by John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World). Winslet is joined in the film by Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley), Josh O’Connor (Emma.), Andrea Riseborough (Oblivion), Andy Samberg (Palm Springs), Marion Cotillard (Inception), and James Murray (6 Underground).

The report about the injury doesn’t include specifics about what Kate Winslet was doing when the fall happened, but–whether it was simply “a precautionary measure” or not–the trip to the hospital was no doubt warranted. There have been a surprising number of stories in the past year about actor injuries on set which seemed negligible at first but later proved to be much more serious. As a result, some of the biggest movies of the next couple of years experienced production delays.

Letitia Wright–whose on-set injury took her months to recover from–in the trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Perhaps the most obvious example was Letitia Wright’s injury last August during overnight shooting in Atlanta. While initially it was reported Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s filming schedule wouldn’t be impacted, Wright ended up needing months to recover. Writer/Director Ryan Coogler shot as much of the sequel as he could without Wright, and then last November production shut down completely until early this year.

Before that there was Harrison Ford’s shoulder injury which he suffered last June–the first month of Indiana Jones 5‘s production. Originally thought to not be serious, the injury required surgery and production halted until Ford could return in early September 2021. If these examples are anything to go on, it’s a good idea for Kate Winslet to take it easy regardless of how minor her fall seemed.
