Julia Louis-Dreyfus is now an official member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She made her appearance in the fifth episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier after John Walker was stripped of his role as Captain America. She seemed extremely sympathetic to his plight and looms to be hoping she can recruit him as an ally for some kind of cause she is a part of. Some fans might be wondering just who this mysterious woman is and why her appearance could end up causing a seismic shift in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus introduces herself in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and that is a character that comes with some incredibly important bits of backstory. In the comics, she was an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and actually was a lover of Nick Fury. She was an exceptional agent but was revealed to have been a Russian double agent for most of her career. At one point, she even joined Hydra and took on the identity of Madame Hydra, a top operative in the villainous organization HYDRA.

So, what could this possibly mean for Julia Louis-Dreyfus in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? First of all, it is important to note that this was not meant to be her introduction to the series. The Contessa was originally slated to appear in Black Widow and we don’t know if she will be popping up in that eventual movie. However, knowing that seems to make a good case for her history as a Russian operative. And as far as her connection to HYDRA, that should send up some serious red flags for any Marvel fan, especially those who have been following the story of Captain America.

Could Julia Louis-Dreyfus be revealed as one of the major players in a revival of HYDRA in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is certainly pulling from the past of the Captain America movies and it could very well be setting up a very new iteration of HYDRA. Even with Baron Zemo supposedly headed to prison, he could easily be roped into becoming another big player in a secret evil organization with new ideals and goals. The Contessa could be spearheading a new anti-S.H.I.E.L.D. outfit and Zemo would certainly be a valuable asset to her.

Not to mention John Walker. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has clearly been able to take advantage of his emotional state after he has been removed as Captain America by the military. Could she end up crafting Walker to become Captain Hydra? In the comics, Captain Hydra is a version of Steve Rogers from an alternate timeline. But the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be taking a new route with the character and make a more grounded version of the character. If so, it would make John Walker into a formidable foe for the future. And all thanks to Julia-Louis Dreyfus and her conniving ways. No matter what, it looks like she will be playing a major role in the Marvel movies and shows ahead.
