John Cena will be making his first foray into the world of comic book superheroes with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The pro wrestler will be portraying Peacemaker, a murderous Captain America type who will do anything he has to in order to achieve world peace. If that means blowing a ton of people to pieces, he has no problem with that! Fans have been eager to see just what Cena will be bringing to the role, and thanks to a new preview from HBO Max, we have our first real idea of his performance.

You can check out this preview for Warner Bros.’ entire 2021 slate of movies, but if you just want to see John Cena and his moment from The Suicide Squad, jump ahead to 1:16:

If that little moment is any indication, it looks like John Cena is going to be a real joy as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad. But, that is not all we see of James Gunn’s upcoming superhero smackdown. We have seen this shot of the characters before, but we got a few more little pieces of it in this preview footage:

This shot shows what might be the surviving members of The Suicide Squad. Starting from the left, we can make out King Shark, Ratcatcher 2, Rick Flag, Bloodsport, Harley Quinn, John Cena’s Peacemaker, Thinker (which is interesting because he is thought to be the villain of the movie), Polka Dot Man, and an unknown final member that almost looks like El Diablo from the first film. The new shots we get here are of Harley Quinn and Rick Flag sharing an unspoken moment of seeming camaraderie.

We also get this shot of Polka Dot Man, Harley Quinn, and Bloodsport running through a crumbling building:

And then, there is John Cena’s Peacemaker. It looks like he is having some kind of altercation with Idris Elba’s Bloodsport who tells him that no one likes a showoff.

To which John Cena replies, “Unless what they’re showing off is dope as f…”, and we bet you know how that line finishes. It is a cheeky line that tells us exactly what kind of personality we can expect from the character of Peacemaker. He’s brash, full of himself, and must have the talent to back it up. We also have to reiterate how much we love Peacemaker’s ridiculous costume. It stands out so much and tells us that he is the kind of character who likes to draw attention to himself. Bottom line: this all looks like a blast.

James Gunn clearly fell in love with John Cena’s version of Peacemaker since there is an entire HBO Max series currently in production that centers around the character. Gunn and Warner Bros. look like they are banking on audiences really enjoying the Peacemaker character, and that could very well be one of the reasons they put him front and center in this new promo.

We cannot wait to see John Cena as Peacemaker and the rest of The Suicide Squad because this movie looks like a total trip. You’ll be able to see it in theaters and on HBO Max when the film releases on August 6.
