Good news about Peacemaker season 2: it is happening. Titular Peacemaker star John Cena announced via Twitter that the hit DC Extended Universe show has officially been renewed for a second season by HBO Max. It is not like there was that much worry about its ultimate fate, however. The show has been both a critical darling (currently holding a 95% at Rotten Tomatoes) and enormously popular, becoming the most popular streaming show in the world last month. But given that Warner Bros has been known to make some pretty oddball decisions on what they do and don’t greenlight, and pretty much every production in the world is currently at the mercy of unexpected Covid-19 delays, it is good to know that it is officially moving forward.

As Peacemaker season 1 draws to a close this week, there have been no details released as to what season 2 could hold. Show creator James Gunn issued a warning on Twitter recently to watch the last few episodes as quickly as possible, so as to not have them spoiled. That certainly does imply that there are some wild events coming up in the finale. For a show that has already involved chainsawing a talking gorilla to death, the T-1000 as a white supremacist and an unexpectedly beautiful Mötley Crüe cover, that could be about anything. Given that this is a show heavy on both ultraviolence and deep emotion, we can probably expect some unexpected deaths of cast members we have grown to love. Nothing had better happen to Eagly, is all we are saying.

While it has been a given that a Peacemaker season 2 has been in the works, we also recently confirmed that James Gunn is already working on another spinoff of his well-received Suicide Squad. While the first attempt at a movie starring DC Comics’ Suicide Squad antihero team by David Ayers was a pretty big disappointment (and which Ayers claimed diverged from his directorial intention), it launched Margot Robbie’s popular interpretation of Harley Quinn. Gunn’s soft reboot was overall considered an improvement, but most significantly, brought in John Cena as the violently oafish/strangely sensitive Peacemaker character. It has been a role that suited both his cartoonish professional wrestler physique and the comedic chops he had honed in films like 2018’s Blockers.

Aside from Peacemaker season 2 and the undisclosed other Suicide Squad spinoff show, James Gunn has the third installment of his Guardians of the Galaxy upcoming for the competition, Marvel Studios. Despite Disney’s seeming mandate that their MCU films keep to a generally consistent visual palette and action-based tone, Gunn has been one of the few directors able to inject some of his own style into the groundbreaking film series. And as Warner Bros’ DCEU has moved into a new period of allowing wildly diverging styles in movies like The Batman, Shazam! and Aquaman, they are making good use of people like Gunn and John Cena. We will have to wait to see what happens at the end of Peacemaker season one to make any guesses for the second, but it is bound to be something pretty weird.
