After comparing Star Wars franchise work to that of staying in a luxurious jail and voicing some strong opinions towards Lucasfilm and Disney, actor John Boyega had a change of heart. In one of his interviews, he stated that he would consider returning to Star Wars if the conditions, and the people involved, are right.

It would seem that the actor John Boyega, credited as Finn in the recent Star Wars trilogy, had a change of heart after moving on from the franchise, as reported by That Hashtag Show. The information comes from a 12-second video clip posted by Palpamemes, a Twitter account dedicated to Star Wars, in which John Boyega shares his opinion on returning to the franchise. When asked about his potential return, the actor said he’s open to the conversation as long as it involves Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and the old team he worked with.

Though it seems that his message originates from the heart, Boyega has plenty of reason not to return to the franchise, given his falling out with Lucasfilm and Disney for sidelining his character, Finn. The actor was supposed to lead the franchise, along with Daisy Ridley’s Ray and Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron, mirroring the Luke-Leia-Han trio from the original trilogy.

However, Lucasfilm’s galloping development of the new trilogy, complemented by lack of proper planning, sidelined John Boyega as Finn and brought significant changes to the overall story, igniting the fandom’s fury directed at Lucasfilm, Disney, and J.J. Abrams.

John Boyega publicly defended J.J. Abrams, saying that the director wasn’t even supposed to return and try to save Lucasfilm’s failure. For those in need of more context, the recent trilogy had a strong start with Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which was written and directed by J.J. Abrams, laying a solid foundation for an upcoming story. However, Abrams was only meant to direct Episode VII, with Rian Johnson writing and directing Episode VIII – The Last Jedi – a sequel that made considerable changes to the established mythology, sidelining John Boyega’s Finn in the process.

The changes made by Rian Johnson in Episode VIII divided the fandom and generated an unprecedented backlash within the franchise, despite its critical acclaim. It prompted the studio to massively alter the follow-up Episode IX – Rise of Skywalker, just to appease the fandom. Unfortunately, it didn’t address the burning question of the trilogy’s original trio of characters but focused heavily on Daisy Ridley’s Ray and Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren, instead.

John Boyega found massive support in his public criticism of Lucasfilm and Disney, despite having defended Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams – the same pair of people the fandom deems directly responsible for the mishaps that befallen the franchise. However, the actor directly named the pair as the main reason he would consider returning to the franchise.

With everything said, it’s hard to imagine John Boyega returning to Star Wars franchise in the foreseeable future. Given how Disney forces that particular goose to lay golden eggs, we might see a Finn-focused spin-off series, with John Boyega as the leading character. But that’s only wishful thinking.
