Jodi Foster is again investigating a murder in the latest season of HBO’s True Detective. Part of the upcoming 2023 sizzle reel shared to the HBO Max YouTube channel gives us a few teasing seconds of what to expect in the hit series’ upcoming season. The anthology series goes to Alaska for the fourth season, ominously subtitled Night Country.

Jodie Foster takes the lead as Detective Liz Danvers, with former boxer Kali Reis as her partner, Evangeline Navarro, continuing True Detective‘s traditional structure of two main investigators. The pair are investigating the disappearance of eight men from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station, starting on December 17, the last day of sunlight before Alaska’s famous 40 days of night. Also part of the upcoming series is Christopher Eccleston, John Hawkes, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc, and Joel D. Montgrand.

Jodie Foster and Kali Reis have big shoes to fill when it comes to the True Detective franchise, which has seen some ups and downs since season 1 in 2014. The immediate smash hit season 1 starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, as detectives investigating the murder of a prostitute in 1995, while facing intense questioning in 2012 from two other detectives, questioning if the original case was actually closed. With an average of almost 12 million views per episode, the series was HBO’s biggest hit since Six Feet Under.

Season 2 takes place in California, focusing on corruption in the unique industrial towns of the state, with Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams as the lead detectives. Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch were also part of the cast, which failed to live up to the success of the first season. Jodie Foster is thankfully not trying to dig True Detective out of the season 2 hole, that task was handled by future MCU star, Mahershala Ali.

The Academy award winner’s season took place in the Ozarks and came four years after season 2, in 2019. This time, the season jumped across more time periods, 1980, 1995, and 2015, to solve the crime of a pair of missing children. Hailed by critics as a return to form, it is now up to Jodie Foster to give True Detective a third award-winning season.

Jodie Foster has been acting since the age of six, winning countless awards, and in a role perfect for a season of True Detective, brought FBI Agent Clarice Darling to life in Silence of the Lambs. Starring opposite Anthony Hopkins’ iconic performance as Hannibal Lector, Foster remains proud of depicting a strong female character in a film about mind over brawn. The actress loved the Thomas Harris novel so much, in fact, she had made an attempt to purchase the film rights.

With an iconic FBI agent role on her resume, Jodie Foster is an amazing addition to the True Detective series, continuing the trend of casting the show with award-winning stars. The series just started filming a few weeks ago, so while it can now be expected in 2023, late in the year is a realistic estimate. Until then, the previous three seasons are available for streaming on HBO Max, so if you haven’t seen Matthew McConaughey and Mahershala Ali’s award-winning performances, take the time to enjoy the short seasons before season 4 makes its debut.
