Jim Carrey has had more than a few truly classic movies in his filmography over the years. From high-energy comedic roles to surprising dramatic turns, the actor has demonstrated a talent to be able to adapt to a variety of different stories and characters. It would be tough to pick what right be the best Jim Carrey movie of all time, but there is one movie that is a very good contender: The Truman Show.

You can watch it for free right here:

Jim Carrey stars as Truman Burbank, a standup guy who lives in an idyllic town and seems to have everything going for him. But soon, he starts to question his reality and ends up discovering that he has been nothing more than an unwitting participant in a show that has chronicled his entire life. In fact, his entire existence has been manufactured by a megalomaniacal director named Christof (Ed Harris). Throughout the movie, Truman begins to contemplate the nature of his world and just why certain events have happened to him. It is a deeply introspective and contemplative movie that offers a truly unique science fiction idea that comes across as an incredible prophetic piece of fiction.

Jim Carrey gives a stunning performance in a role that seemed a little offbeat for the usual comedic fare that made him a superstar. Truman Burbank is supposed to be something of an everyman that the audience relates to. He’s purposefully crafted to be a loveable and relatable character as that is part of the story regarding his manufactured life. The film has us asking our own questions about how media manipulates our emotions about people, and how it can be used to dominate and control the lives of both viewers and the people involved in these productions. It is a cutting attempt at commentary that manages to still be effective over twenty years later.

And the Jim Carrey movie ended up being a telling piece of speculative fiction. It was not long after The Truman Show that the reality TV boom of the early 2000s took hold and audiences became captivated by what they believed were truly authentic examinations of real people in filmed situations. It was kind of terrifying to see The Truman Show be ignored by mass audiences in favor of supporting the elements that the movie was trying to criticize. And The Truman Show has only become less fictionalized as online culture has made an entire industry around filming kids and monetizing that content. It is not too unbelievable that a proposal such as The Truman Show could become a reality.

Thankfully, Jim Carrey came out of The Truman Show an even bigger and more respected actor than he was before. The role is easily one of his most celebrated performances and continues to be brought up when talking about his body of work. Carrey has obviously gone on to great comedic success but continues to take dramatic roles from time to time. Still, almost nothing can quite compare to the powerful acting he put in for The Truman Show. If you have never seen it, there has never been a better time to see this utter classic.
