Good news and bad news for the upcoming Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld Hawkeye series. The good news is that we have an official image giving us a look at the two leads and a release date for November 24. The bad news is that we still don’t have a trailer, but we will take what we can get from Marvel Studios.
The image tweeted from Marvel, with an exclusive scoop from Entertainment Weekly, shows Jeremy Renner and his protege standing together. The room has targets, arrows and is nicely lit by some Christmas lights in the background.
The series will be a new arc for Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton as he takes Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop under his wing. She is a fan and fellow archer who somehow meets her hero and convinces him to train her. It will also tie into Black Widow as the post-credit scene of the film showed Yelena (played by Little Women‘s Florence Pugh) will hunt down Hawkeye. She was convinced he was to blame for her sister’s death by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Veep‘s Julia Louis-Dreyfus).
While Clint Barton is a beloved character from the Marvel comics who has been brought to life since The Avengers, with Jeremy Renner portraying him, Kate Bishop has skyrocketed in the source material as a popular hero. She was created by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung in 2005’s Young Avengers #1. During her debut, Clint was dead (and later came back to life, since comic books do that with their characters sometimes), and she took the Hawkeye moniker. Her most notable run was by teaming up with a much-alive Clint in the 2012-2015 series by Matt Fraction and David Aja. It feels like Hailee Steinfeld and her mentor will follow the story from Fraction and Aja with some Marvel Cinematic Universe twists.
A seed of this partnership was planted in the minds of fans, even non-comic book readers. The opening of Avengers: Endgame showed Jeremy Renner teaching his daughter how to use the bow and arrow. Unfortunately for him, things did not go so well as his family became dust from Thanos’ snap.
Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, and Florence Pugh will be met with a stacked cast. They will be joined by Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Zahn McClarnon (Westworld), Brian d’Arcy James (Spotlight), and Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul).
Both of the lead actors have had enormous careers. Hailee Steinfeld was nominated for an Oscar at a young age in 2010’s True Grit. She has since been in Pitch Perfect 2 and 3, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Bumblebee. Jeremy Renner has been in each of the ensemble Marvel movies minus Infinity War with Avengers, Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and Endgame. His other notable movies have been Arrival, 28 Weeks Later, and The Hurt Locker, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award like he was a year later in The Town.
Hawkeye will release on Disney Plus on November 24. Jonathan Igla (Mad Men) will be the showrunner of the Jeremy Renner superhero series.
