Long rumored to be Jennifer Lopez’s latest project, the multi-hypenate singer and actor has been filming the upcoming thriller movie The Mother for Netflix. Along with an ensemble cast and directed by Niki Caro of Whale Rider fame, The Mother is set to be released on the subscription streaming platform in May 2023. Now, the official teaser trailer for the movie has dropped this week on Netflix’s official YouTube channel, and it seems to show off Jennifer Lopez’s jacked body and arms as the 53 year-old does pull-ups for the camera.

Highlighting Jennifer Lopez’s greatest assets as an actor, The Mother depicts Lopez’s character as she is presented to audiences as an assassin desperately trying to protect her daughter at all costs. Lopez looks to have gotten in shape for the role, even though her performing schedules most likely demand that the dancer remain in shape as much as possible. The Mother will concentrate on the life of Lopez’s assassin alter ego as she reconnects with the daughter she had distanced herself from early in life, in addition to fleeing other dangerous assassins that threaten both of their lives.

The Mother will star Jennifer Lopez alongside some familiar faces in Joseph Fiennes from The Handmaid’s Tale, Mozart in the Jungle actor Gael García Bernal, Power star Omari Hardwick, Sound of Metal Academy Award nominee Paul Raci, and Ambulance’s Jesse Garcia. With the first teaser trailer released this week, it showcases the movie’s various filming locations, including the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, as it stands in for Cuba where much of The Mother will take place. Lopez produced the film alongside her longtime producing partner, Benny Medina, who has also been a record executive and talent manager to Lopez in the past.

As the newest venture in the long line of Jennifer Lopez’s career, The Mother is one of the first projects the actor has attempted for Netflix. Her previous vehicle was Marry Me, which debuted on Peacock during the Valentine’s Day weekend of 2022, also starring Owen Wilson as her love interest. Marry Me was not a run away hit with critics and ended up becoming a mixed bag for audiences, as Rotten Tomatoes currently ranks the film with a 61% on its Tomatometer based on 210 critics’ reviews and an Audience Score of 92% based on over 1,000 verified ratings from users to the site.

While The Mother may be a movie that Jennifer Lopez will enjoy promoting when it is released to Netflix next year, it’s the singer’s personal life that has been making the most headlines recently. Her re-engagement to actor Ben Affleck in the last couple of years has resulted in a lavish wedding for the two high-profile celebrities in 2022. In addition to her private life becoming ever so public, Lopez recently wrapped production on Shotgun Wedding starring Jennifer Coolidge and Josh Duhamel, which will end up premiering in early 2023 to kick off what will most likely be a busy year for the performer.
