Amazon Freevee added over 50 new titles to its streaming catalog this month. Along with all three films from the Bill & Ted franchise, there’s also the hit comedy Get Him to the Greek, the Jason Bateman-led film, Identity ThiefThe Devil Wears PradaThe Purge, and more. The streamer also released Red Sparrow starring Jennifer Lawrence.

Billed as a spy thriller, Red Sparrow is based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Jason Matthews. The story follows ballerina Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) who is recruited by a Russian intelligence service. Transformed from a ballerina into a femme fatale, her first mission threatens to unravel the security of the United States and Russia.

The Jennifer Lawrence-led film is directed by Francis Lawrence from a script by Justin Haythe. It was released in March 2018, earning a modest $151 million at the global box office. Its critical reception was also lukewarm, with experts describing the project as “having more style than substance.” Its extended runtime and over-reliance on graphic violence and sex were maligned.

But due to a stellar performance from Jennifer Lawrence, Red Sparrow still holds a middling 45 percent critics score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s general consensus says the movie aims for smart, sexy spy thriller territory. But, despite a stellar performance from its lead star, the story is a disappointment with thin characters and a convoluted plot.

Along with Jennifer Lawrence as Dominika Egorova, Red Sparrow also stars Joel Edgerton as CIA operative Nate Nash. Matthias Schoenaerts appears as Dominika’s uncle and Deputy Director of the SVR, Ivan Vladimirovich Egorov. Charlotte Rampling is featured as the Headmistress of Sparrow School. And Mary-Louise Parker stars as U.S. Senator’s Chief of Staff Stephanie Boucher.

Speaking to 60 minutes in 2018, Jennifer Lawrence explained how the film’s nudity and sexuality helped her reclaim her sexual empowerment after a 2014 phone hack. “I realized there’s a difference between consent and not,” she said via Indie Wire. “I showed up for the first day and I did it and I felt empowered,” the actress added.

Director Francis Lawrence gave Jennifer Lawrence the opportunity to request the removal of any nude scenes she was uncomfortable with in post-production. But, happy with the original cut, she declined. However, Red Sparrow was edited for the United Kingdom release. A death-by-strangulation scene was removed to secure a 15 certificate from the British Board of Film Classification.

Following the mediocre success of Red Sparrow and other films, Jennifer Lawrence took a small break from acting. Unsatisfied with her work, she wanted to avoid media scrutiny and focus on getting a life, she told Vanity Fair. Then in 2021, she wanted to work with director Adam McKay and returned to film Don’t Look Up for Netflix.

Don’t Look Up follows two low-level astronomers who attempt to warn humanity about an extinction-level astronomical event. The pair tries everything to get people to listen, including media tours, talk show appearances, and even meetings with the President. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence alongside Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, and Mark Rylance.
