Negan The Walking Dead

Jeffrey Dean Morgan wasn’t the first guy you’d think of as an inherently evil and chilling villain on the screen, but one part can change all the previous perception about an actor. And that’s exactly what’s happened with this guy in recent years since joining the cast of The Walking Dead. It looks like he’s here to stay within that franchise too and according to We Got This Covered, there are plans to even expand the part. Apparently, discussions are happening to create a standalone spin-off show around his Negan character. Thought you knew everything about Dean Morgan and his character within the show? Think again because there could be even more stories coming soon.

It’s not all that surprising to think about Jeffrey Dean Morgan getting a spin-off show in The Walking Dead universe now even though it might not have jumped out as an idea early on. This franchise continues to grow and expand, covering more ground and more stories within a world of the zombie takeover. There are rumors and confirmations around all kinds of different programs so why not get one about one of the most interesting dudes in the universe? Even the bad guys have a history and a story as unpleasant as it might be.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan was on the Conan O’Brien show and offered a lengthy quote about the possibility of this Negan spin-off and what it might mean for the character. He said this:

“We’ll see. It’s definitely being talked about,” Morgan told Conan. “I think they’re thinking of a couple different ideas, but I’ve definitely had conversations about possibly continuing the story of Negan. You know, we just did the ‘Here’s Negan’ story, which is sort of the prequel (of) how Negan became this guy, and I shot that with my wife which was so cool. It was awesome. We had so much fun, and I think the episode turned out really well.”

Jeffrey Dean Morgan first appeared as Negan in Season 6 of The Walking Dead after having been a featured character in the comic book series. When he was introduced he was the leader of the Saviors and acted as brutal enforcer and owner of “Lucille” the barb-wired bat he uses to mete out punishment. The first chance we see the character, after having him be rumored over the course of the season was a brutal reminder of the unforgiving world the characters are living in within the show.

Over the seasons, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was featured even more and we learned that Negan is more of a layered character than just the inherently evil dude we are first introduced to. He’s not a good dude by any means, far from it. But in some backstory, it’s clear that the zombie apocalypse, as well as severe personal trauma, helped to shape the character we are eventually introduced to. While not an excuse for how he acts on the show, there is at least some explanation for how Negan’s past affects his present.

This latest rumor from Jeffrey Dean Morgan doesn’t give much insight into how the spin-off show would take the character. Some of that could be shaped by this next season of The Walking Dead. In many ways, Negan has changed over the seasons and there could be a continued redemption story somewhere in there. I doubt much of it would be prequel considering much of that was handled in previous seasons.

If Jeffrey Dean Morgan does get a Negan spin-off, it would join the growing list of programs either running or planned in this franchise. There’s already Fear the Walking Dead and Walking Dead: The World Beyond. Plans are in the works for a Daryl spin-off show as well which could involve him and Carol. So getting a Negan story would fit right into the current plans and could be one of the more interesting stories to tell.
