Even though the current season of The Walking Dead will serve as the show’s last, with the final batch of episodes premiering October 2nd, AMC plans to expand on their zombie universe with various spin-off projects. One of those projects is the upcoming Maggie-Negan spin-off called The Walking Dead: Dead City, which the network recently renamed from Isle of the Dead. According to ComicBook, a recent Twitter post by TVObsessed brings us our first look at Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan from the forthcoming series that is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2023.

The Walking Dead: Dead City will team Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan), who travel to a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, which was cut off from the mainland long ago. The crumbling city is overrun with the dead and denizens who have turned New York City into their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror. The series will reportedly premiere with a six-episode first season.

Dead City was announced back in March 2022 but under the working title Isle of the Dead. Eli Jorné, who is a writer and co-executive producer on The Walking Dead, will serve as showrunner for the upcoming series, which Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple will oversee. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan will also serve as executive producers.

The Walking Dead premiered on October 31st, 2010, with a first season that consisted of six episodes. The wildly popular series is now in its 11th and final season, which AMC has broken up into three separate parts. We’re guessing the final episodes will explain how and why the characters portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan end up in New York.

Although Jeffrey Dean Morgan didn’t appear as Negan in The Walking Dead until the show’s sixth season, Lauren Cohan joined the series as Maggie Rhee in season two. Cohan’s character was surviving on a family farm with her father Herschel and sister Beth, while harboring a brutal secret in their barn. A relationship was forged between Maggie and Glenn (Steven Yeun) during this season, and of course, the latter was brutally murdered by Morgan’s character Negan later in the show leaving fans shocked and enraged.

The Walking Dead may finally be coming to an end after twelve successful years on the air, but AMC is in no way ready to say goodbye to one of its most lucrative properties. In addition to the upcoming spin-off series starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan, the network has two additional spin-offs in the works. One of the projects AMC announced is a limited spin-off series that will reunite Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira, while another project is a spin-off centered around Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus).

AMC’s groundbreaking zombie series will return October 2nd with its final bundle of episodes, and we’re anxious to see how everything plays out. The extended 24-episode season premiered last August, and now only eight episodes remain. The final season of The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Josh McDermitt, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Lauren Cohan, and Christian Serratos.
