According to FlixPatrolSpy is streaming for free on Freevee and has landed on the platform’s Top 10 list this week. Directed by noted comedy helmer Paul Feig, Spy stars Melissa McCarthy as Susan Cooper, a bumbling low-level CIA office employee who finds herself at the center of international espionage as she poses as an undercover CIA agent. Jason Statham portrays Rick Ford, a fellow agent who underestimates Susan’s skills while assisting her in her endeavors as a newly minted agent. Overseas, Ford watches out for Susan as she becomes a spy battling Rose Byrne’s Rayna Boyanov. There is a hint of romantic intentions behind Susan and Ford’s characters, which unfold dramatically and comically by the film’s end.

The filming of Spy was an adventurous one for Jason Statham, similar to the big-budgeted movies he had become accustomed to at this point in his career. The character he played in the film is generally a spoof on himself, making fun of the type of action and thrill seekers he’s used to playing onscreen. The shoot itself was also probably enjoyable as it saw the cast travel to incredible locations like Budapest, Hungary. Budapest was the primary spot for filming since the city could look like other European cities of the same caliber, similar to how filmmakers today often use Toronto or Vancouver as a backdrop for New York City and Los Angeles.

Spy was promoted by 20th Century Fox as a James Bond type of spy thriller, mixed with a lot of humor that only Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham could provide. The movie went on to gross over $235 million against a budget of $65 million, making it the number one movie in the United States upon the weekend of its release. Unfortunately for Spy, it fell drastically at the box office the following weekend when Jurassic World debuted, according to Deadline. However, the film bounced back due in large part because of its cast’s star power, which also featured Jude Law, comedian Miranda Hart, Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney, 50 Cent, Peter Serafinowicz, and Ben Falcone.

Even with a more than modest box office gross, Spy became a sleeper hit for Jason Statham and Melissa McCarthy, with critics and audiences agreeing that the film is worth watching. Rotten Tomatoes ranks the movie as Certified Fresh with a 95% rating on its Tomatometer based on 260 critic reviews, while the Audience Score rests at 78% among over 50,000 user ratings. Similarly, Metacritic currently boasts a rating of 75 based on 40 critic reviews on the site, which is generally favorable for movies like Spy. However, the User Score on Metacritic is listed at 4.9 based on 850 user ratings, which typically denotes a mixed review from audiences. The movie served as a vehicle for McCarthy to demonstrate her comedic talents, which resulted in the actor being nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. It further cemented the collaboration that McCarthy and Feig enjoyed, with hits like BridesmaidsThe Heat, and the remake of Ghostbusters.

The Jason Statham-led movie Spy was released in 2015 and is an exciting choice to be featured on Freevee. The streaming platform is owned by Amazon and boasts a slew of series and films that are available to the general public for free with the download of the Freevee app. It was once known as IMDB TV before it was rebranded in 2022 to its current state. Now it appears that viewers are flocking to watch Spy, which coincides with the success the movie had when it was initially released in theaters seven years ago.
