James Marsden is going to be back on one of his best projects when HBO’s Westworld returns in June. The sci-fi series is entering its fourth season, and this will be Marsden’s first time back since recurring in the second season. Marsden starred in the first season with a more prominent role, so it remains to be seen what he’ll be doing here in the fourth season.

James Marsden played Teddy Flood in the first season, a new marksman coming to town as part of the theme park’s “narrative.” The Jonathan Nolan and Lisa-Joy created series is based on the Michael Crichton film of the same name and depicts a futuristic theme park populated by androids set in a fictional past where people can pay large sums of money to live out any fantasy they desire.

Though we don’t know exactly who James Marsden will be playing, it seems likely that it will be a new character or a reprogrammed version of his original android character. In Season 2, Teddy killed himself after finding out his programming had been changed by Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood). It’ll be interesting to find out who Marsden will be portraying this time around. We also know that Evan Rachel Wood will be playing a new character this time around. Other actors who are returning will be Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, and Angela Sarafyan. The Oscar-winning Ariana DeBose is also on board.

Seeing James Marsden return in Westworld is a surprise and they did a good job keeping that bit of casting news under wraps. The reveal was at a panel during the ATX Television Festival, where Marsden made a surprise appearance. With the show releasing its fourth season in June, this will be one of the last projects we’ll see Marsden in this year. His only other planned project for 2022 is the Enchanted sequel Disenchanted. Marsden will be reprising his role as Prince Edward in the movie, which is set ten years after the original. Amy Adams returns as Giselle, with Patrick Dempsey and Idina Menzel also returning. Newcomers include Oscar Nunez, Jayma Mays, Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown, Kolton Stewart, and Gabriella Baldacchino.

Westworld isn’t the only big franchise that James Marsden appeared in 2022. Earlier this year, he returned as Tom Wachowski in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The sequel to the wildly successful original featured Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and his new friend Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) going up against Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba). The success of the sequel means that it’s very likely that there will be more Sonic in the future for Marsden, with the potential for the franchise to go even further.

It remains to be seen how involved James Marsden is going to be in the new season of Westworld. We might get him for a couple of episodes or maybe he’ll be around for the whole season. You won’t have to wait long to find out. Westworld premieres on HBO on June 26.
