For many of us, it was a bittersweet weekend as we headed to the cinema to see the third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise – which is also being billed as its last. But, even though we’re bidding adieu to this lineup for cosmic protectors, James Gunn is leaving hope open that fans will see one of them again but this time crossing studios and landing in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. Giving away his secret, in a tweet that you can see below, the DC Studios co-leader did nothing more than confirm the news.

When it comes to fandoms, one of the most exciting things – aside from meeting your favorite stars and directors – is to receive a response from them on Twitter. Such was the case for one lucky James Gunn stan after the user asked if any of the cast of Guardians would make an appearance in Superman: Legacy. Dropping a subtle “Yes,” the Peacemaker creator gave his following just enough of an answer to kick theories and speculations into high gear.

Immediately, the comment section began popping off with everyone dropping in their thoughts of who James Gunn would be bringing along with him into the DC Universe for Superman: Legacy. The seemingly obvious choice, as mentioned by one fan, is that the filmmaker will bring his wife and frequent collaborator, Jennifer Holland on board for his latest action flick. Not only did she have an ensemble role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 but she’s long portrayed the role of Emilia Harcourt in previous DC films including The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and the HBO Max series, Peacemaker, making her a shoo-in for a jump into Superman.

Another likely guess came from a fan who suspects that James Gunn will team up with Firefly star Nathan Fillion for Superman: Legacy as the two have not only previously worked on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 together but also The Suicide Squad. No stranger to the world of DC, Fillion has also been heard in animated projects including Reign of the Superman, The Death of Superman, and Justice League: Throne of Atlantis.

While it’s still up in the air, both Nathan Fillion and Jennifer Holland are terrific guesses at whom James Gunn could be bringing along with him from the Guardians finale into the world of Superman. With Henry Cavill not being asked to return for the movie, as it’s been reported to be venturing into different Man of Steel territory, it’s anyone’s guess who will be donning the hero’s suit and taking flight. However, it seems unlikely that anyone like Dave Bautista or Chris Pratt would jump into the giant boots of Superman so we’re thinking Gunn’s crossover actor will be playing a smaller role.

What we do know is that the James Gunn penned and directed feature will see a younger version of Superman but won’t be an origin story. He’ll have already gotten used to his powers but will be battling his Kryptonian background with the life he’s come to know and love on Earth. As of right now, Superman: Legacy is expected to fly into cinemas on July 11, 2025.
