DC fans were left with their jaws on the floor following the recent news that Warner Bros. Discovery had appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran to oversee its cinematic universe. Since the bombshell announcement, the rumor machine has kicked into overdrive, with some folks claiming to know what the co-CEOs have planned for the future of the DCU. However, Gunn recently took to Twitter to call “bulls—t” on anyone asserting they know what he and Safran have in store regarding DC’s upcoming slate of features.

After a fan on Twitter asked James Gunn about an alleged leak in relation to the future of Batman in the DC Universe, the Guardians of the Galaxy director had a blunt response. “Anyone who says they know anything about anything in the future DCU is bull**tting, because right now that’s truly only me and Peter.” With all the hearsay currently bouncing around the internet in relation to DC’s forthcoming projects, it’s nice to see Gunn offering a bit of clarity.

Of course, James Gunn is directly responsible for some of the recent speculation. A week ago, he posted an image of the DC anti-hero Lobo on the social media website Mastodon, leading fans to believe the bounty hunter would be introduced in the DC Universe somewhere down the line. He also ignited plenty of speculation after sharing an image of Mister Terrific on his Twitter page.

Still, if James Gunn says that he and Peter Safran are the only two people to have knowledge of what’s in store for the DC Universe, then any information that hasn’t come directly from either of their mouths should probably be taken with a grain of salt. After all, it’s hard to imagine someone in a position as high as Gunn’s going out of his way to shut down rumors. With that said, fans are anxious for some official announcements related to DC’s future slate of projects, and hopefully such reveals come sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, there is a slew of DC projects headed our way, with most of them being developed long before James Gunn was hired to oversee the DC Universe. Zachary Levi will return as the titular character in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters March 17, 2023, after multiple delays. Another movie hit with several delays is the long-awaited The Flash starring Ezra Miller, which is currently slated to hit theaters June 23, 2023.

Further out, the Angel Manuel Soto-directed Blue Beetle, which was originally being developed for HBO Max, will now receive a theatrical release on August 18, 2023. After that, Jason Momoa will traverse the oceans once again in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, arriving in theaters December 25, 2023. Again, it’s unclear at this time if James Gunn has or will have any involvement in the development of the above-mentioned titles, particularly since most of them were in post-production before he was appointed co-CEO of DC Studios.

Although the DC Universe is currently in a state of uncertainty, fans can’t help but be excited about what the future has in store now that James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over the reins of DC Studios. Gunn is no stranger to comic book adaptation, having directed multiple Guardians of the Galaxy pictures for Marvel before writing and directing The Suicide Squad and the HBO Max spin-off Peacemaker for DC. While it’s still unclear where Gunn and Safran plan to steer DC Studios, it’s safe to say that the future looks bright for the company.
