Although James Gunn doesn’t seem to have any intention of bringing back Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern, fans can still count on an HBO Max series about the green space cops. There has been a series about the Green Lantern corps in the works since 2019 and fans were worried that it might be axed from Gunn’s future plans for DC. However, Gunn took to Twitter to reveal that news about the series being canceled was fake, so it looks like the Greg Berlanti series is still on track (via Yahoo! Entertainment).

After James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the future of the DCU, many plans were changed so they could start with a cleaner slate. It’s definitely understandable that fans would expect the Green Lantern HBO Max series to be in the firing line. Fortunately, it looks like the only change is who the series will focus on.

Originally, the series was going to focus on Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, with Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine playing the roles. While those two might still be involved, the series is going to be shifting its focus to John Stewart instead. This would line up with James Gunn’s comments about his DCU being inspired by the DC Animated Universe, as John Stewart was a fan-favorite Green Lantern in the Justice League animated series.

Casual fans are less familiar with Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, so it makes sense that the series is deciding to pivot to a more well-known character. James Gunn is making a lot of changes to the DCU, so it will be interesting to see how this Green Lantern series factors into his greater plans. Since the series is on HBO Max, it will share a home with Gunn’s own Peacemaker series.

While James Gunn is keeping the Green Lantern series safe from cancellation, there are plenty of other DC plans that have been adjusted. Two of the biggest changes were dropping Henry Cavill from the Superman role right after it seemed like he was coming back. The other big shock was that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 3 was not moving forward.

It also appears that James Gunn has no plans to incorporate Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, as the film didn’t do so well financially. Johnson took to Instagram to talk about the news, so that’s another major character that seemingly won’t be a part of the new slate of projects — at least for now. The Green Lantern series has been in development for a while and it’s reportedly quite expensive, so it appears Gunn and Safran are willing to take a risk on it.

Despite some of the major shakeups, James Gunn has also kept quite a few projects on the future docket. In addition to keeping the Green Lantern HBO Max series in the plans, we’ll also be seeing Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Blue Beetle, and The Flash. Of course, we’ll also be getting another season of Peacemaker, so we have quite a few DCU projects to look forward to in the near future.
