The end of the month is always a bittersweet time for Netflix subscribers as it means that we’ll be bidding adieu to several titles, but will also stand to gain a slew of new content. Those who love sports-based productions and the man, the myth, the legend himself, Samuel L Jackson, will be pleased to know that the Jackson-led 2005 basketball drama, Coach Carter will be taking the court beginning December 1. With primarily positive reviews from critics, despite its 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is a must-see for anyone who loves a good based-on-a-true-story sports feature.

Coach Carter tells the tale of the titular basketball coach played by Samuel L Jackson, who made a hotly debated decision for his undefeated high school team when he pulled them out of competition due to their poor performance in school. The true story happened in 1999 at Richmond High School in Richmond, California, and took over news headlines with the coach making a play that was both embraced and criticized by his peers. Directed by Thomas Carter of Save the Last Dance fame, the story was adapted into screenplay form by John Gatins and Mark Schwahn (One Tree Hill).

Along with Samuel L Jackson, the movie starred a cast filled to the brim with young and recognizable names including Channing Tatum (Magic Mike) for whom Coach Carter served as his big break, Rob Brown (Finding Forrester), Debbi Morgan (All My Children), Robert Ri’chard (Cousin Skeeter), and pop-music superstar Ashanti. Like any good movie coming out in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, Coach Carter boasted a soundtrack composed by the well-known guitar player, Trevor Rabin, the leading guitarist of Yes. That same year would see the debut of several other sports films including the Adam Sandler-led comedy The Longest Yard, the Shia LaBeouf-led biographical golf feature, The Greatest Game Ever Played, and the Russell Crowe and Renée Zellweger-led boxing true-story, Cinderella Man

Along with Samuel L Jackson’s Coach Carter, several other new movies may pique your interest when they land on Netflix over the next few weeks. While Brad Pitt’s A River Runs Through It is leaving the streamer, he’ll be seen in the 2004 war epic, Troy as well as 2022’s action-packed assassin flick, Bullet Train. Meanwhile movies including Aubrey Plaza’s Emily the Criminal and the highly anticipated Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will also be taking audiences by storm as well as the expected holiday movies and original series Netflix is known for.

Boasting a credit list as long as a CVS receipt, Samuel L Jackson has been in the game for a multitude of decades taking on just about every role imaginable. Next up, we’ll see the Snakes on a Plane actor step back into his Marvel role of Nick Fury in Disney+ and Marvel’s series, Secret Invasion. There, fans will see him starring alongside Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Martin Freeman, and Don Cheadle in a show that faces Nick Fury and his allies against an army of shapeshifting aliens known as the Skrulls.
