Idris Elba has had one of the most interesting careers you’ll see in Hollywood. He was reportedly close to hanging acting up altogether before landing a spot in HBO’s The Wire and has parlayed that role into a career that’s spanned the drama, action, superhero, and comedy genres while showing a gift in all of them. Soon, he’s going to add a successful video game franchise to the list as well. He’s set to star in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 coming soon to theaters. And now, according to the most recent announcement from Paramount, things aren’t going to stop there. It looks like Elba will be voicing Knuckles the Echidna is his own series as well.

The official announcement from Paramount about the Knuckles the Echidna series came via their Twitter account which hyped the upcoming movie while also letting on that we would be getting more Idris Elba in this universe. It’s an exciting time for the popular video game franchise which had a successful run the first time out with its adaptation and seems to have even bigger things planned this time around. Check out the announcement and what could be in store for a new Knuckles series with Idris Elba on Paramount.

When it comes to these streaming platforms, we are seeing time and time again that a successful franchise can’t just stop with a movie or two. No chance. Once you have a viable set of characters, it’s time to start mining every possible story out of the crew. That looks like it is going to be the case with Idris Elba and Knuckles, the latter a character fans were pumped to see coming up in the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie. As part of the classic video game canon, the character was noticeably absent the first time around. And fans were right to have some critiques that the flick wasn’t totally in line with the stylings of the class Sonic fare.

But then Idris Elba let on that he was coming on board as Knuckles for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the franchise was also going to refashion Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik more off the original look of the game. From the early trailers, Sonic and Knuckles are going to throw down in this one. But there’s a chance it doesn’t end the way it starts. There is some precedence in the original games that could open the doorway to a more even story for the character.

This new Knuckles series, possibly just using that name as its title, will come to ParamountPlus sometime in the near future. While the studio didn’t release any details on that front, it could follow the events of this upcoming movie, or it could be an origin story for the character. I guess some of that depends on what happens with the Master Emerald in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and whether Knuckles is able to determine, like in the games, that he is being used by the evil doctor. That could set him on the path as a new hero, something perfect for an upcoming series.
