Hugh Jackman could be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wolverine. While it sounds too good to be true, it was the actor himself who sent social media into a frenzy after sharing two interesting photos on his Instagram Stories alluding to his return.

In the first image, the 52-year-old actor is seen posing with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. He also shared a very cool poster of the character’s signature claws.

While the pairing of these pictures is a major tease, it’s by no means definitive proof that Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine. The photo with Feige is actually an old shot from San Diego Comic-Con in 2013. And the image of the iconic claws was designed by an Australian graphic design artist Kode Abdo, otherwise known as Boss Logic. It did not appear to be officially commissioned by Marvel Studios.

He has also publicly stated that he is ready to move on from the character, but once should never say never in Hollywood. In 2017 the actor said if the opportunity to appear alongside the Avengers presented itself, he would return to the role in a heartbeat. At the time Hugh Jackman told the press that appearing in an Avengers movie would prove too much to turn down because he’s always loved the idea of Wolverine within that dynamic.

As expected, fans around the world are optimistic about Hugh Jackman joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Comments like “Alright!!!” and “Don’t give me hope!” pretty much summed up what a lot of folks people were feeling when they first saw the actor’s post.

Someone else wrote, “We need another film hahaha @thehughjackman”, while a couple of apprehensive fans added, “Don’t do that, don’t give me hope” and “Why he playing with us.”

One person speculated about the “III” in the caption with the question, “Deadpool 3?”

Another fan looked at the decision Marvel would have to make if and when Wolverine makes a triumphant return, “A new Wolverine reveal? The amazing Hugh Jackman possibly making a return??!!!”

The excitement from fans is completely understandable as Hugh Jackman has become synonymous with the X-Men character. After making his debut as the anti-hero in 2000’s X-Men, Jackman went on to portray Wolverine in X-Men, X2: X-Men UnitedX-Men: The Last StandX-Men Origins: WolverineX-Men: First Class (cameo), The WolverineX-Men: Days of Future Past, and X-Men: Apocalypse. He played the character one last time in 2017’s Logan before deciding it was time to retract his claws for good.

However, if Jackman doesn’t reprise the role, Wolverine’s return should definitely not be ruled out. Now that Disney owns the rights to the X-Men property a reboot of the popular mutant franchise is inevitable. And the studio will obviously have to recast his character. Convincing Hugh Jackman to come back (even for a cameo) would not only prevent potential backlash, but it would also be a safe bet for movie executives since Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine has been a hit with fans and critics.
