Despite the tumultuous events going on in Hollywood caused by the writers’ strike, the show must go on, as they say, and Apple TV and Skydance have decided not to wait around to announce their next big blockbuster. According to Deadline, the two movie powerhouses are producing a star-studded collaboration featuring everyone’s favorite Canadian actor, Ryan Reynolds, and Irish acting legend, Kenneth Branagh. The feature, titled Mayday, is set to be directed by Horrible Bosses writers and Game Night directors, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

Goldstein and Daley initially pitched the idea for Mayday to Skydance, who had been developing the concept before Apple’s involvement. However, it was Ryan Reynolds‘ keen interest in April that catapulted Mayday into the realm of serious consideration. While the exact start date remains unknown, it appears likely that this might be Reynolds’ next project following the wrap of Deadpool 3.

Curiously, details regarding the plot of Mayday have been kept under wraps, adding an air of mystique to the project. This shroud of secrecy only fuels the anticipation for what promises to be a thrilling, and likely hilarious, adventure on the big screen. With a team like Ryan Reynolds, Kenneth Branagh, Jonathan Goldstein, and John Francis Daley, nothing short of audacious humor is to be expected.

According to Deadline’s exclusive sources, the project has been in the works for quite some time, with the script having been completed before the recent WGA Strike began. Because of the film’s timeline, Mayday will likely end up with better luck than Ryan Reynolds’ other project in the works, Deadpool 3. Because Deadpool 3 is currently in production while the WGA Strike is ongoing, Reynolds legally cannot perform any of his famous improvisations for the Merc with a Mouth that are known to make the Deadpool films so much better—a challenge the actor likely won’t have to face if production for Mayday begins after the WGA Strike concludes.

Mayday marks a reunion between Ryan Reynolds and Apple, following their successful collaboration on the hit Christmas musical Spirited, which debuted to great acclaim on Apple TV+ last fall. Not one to shy away from collaborations, Reynolds has also forged a strong partnership with Skydance through his previous Netflix sci-fi adventure, The Adam Project.

While Ryan Reynolds is currently immersed in the world of Marvel Studios while filming Deadpool 3, that’s not the only project the actor has in his pipeline. Paramount’s dramedy, Imaginary Friends, is in the post-production stage and is set to grace theaters next year as the next project you catch a glimpse of Reynolds on the silver screen. Meanwhile, Branagh, renowned for his remarkable performances and directing prowess, has his plate full as well and will next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which will hit theaters on July 21.

As the anticipation for Mayday continues to build, fans eagerly await the unveiling of the film’s plot and the commencement of production. With Ryan Reynolds and the rest of the team behind it, we know it’s going to be good.
