San Diego Comic-Con is coming up this weekend, which means we’re about to get an influx of the best geek content out there, including trailers and sneak peeks from Marvel, DC, and many more. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe mega panel on Saturday is probably going to get the most attention this weekend, DC might have some surprises of their own, namely during their Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods panel earlier in the day. Supposedly, Henry Cavill will be making an appearance to confirm his return as Superman. If DC wanted to pull the weekend buzz to their camp, this would be a good way to do it.

Henry Cavill returning as Superman has been one of the biggest question marks hanging over the future of the DC Universe. He hasn’t appeared as the character since Justice League and by extension, the re-released Snyder Cut version of the Justice League. Though that movie received fairly mixed reviews, the end of the movie finally portrayed a Superman that was more in line with the comic book and the Christopher Reeves versions of the character. Fans have been waiting for Henry Cavill to appear in a Superman movie that focuses on his status as a beacon for humanity, rather than the broody and dark movies we’ve seen with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Fans had begun to speculate that Henry Cavill wouldn’t be returning to the Superman role at all after the Justice League showed up in the finale of the hit HBO show Peacemaker. While Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa were there to play the Flash and Aquaman respectively, Cavill’s Superman was just seen as a silhouette, so he definitely didn’t show up on set to record anything for the scene. However, Cavill has indicated his interest in returning to the role, so fans have been holding out hope. An appearance at Comic-Con would definitely cement the fact that Cavill is back and ready to don the cape and tights.

While Henry Cavill might be the big surprise at the DC panel, it won’t be the only property the studio will be showing off this weekend. The Black Adam and Shazam!: Fury of the Gods panel will also feature stars Dwayne Johnson and Zachary Levi, presumably alongside new trailers and sneak peeks of these highly anticipated movies. There will also be panels for the upcoming Sandman Netflix adaptation, some animated DC properties, and more. Undoubtedly, Marvel will bring the heat too, with mastermind Kevin Feige surely having some surprises in store. Some material from She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and the next big blockbuster Black Panther: Wakanda Forever seem like sure things, but Marvel usually doesn’t disappoint when it comes to showing off something unexpected. Then again, they could be saving it up for the D23 event in September.

Whether or not Henry Cavill makes an appearance at the Con, you can expect there to be plenty of hype and news about the best upcoming projects in geekdom. If you’re ready to see more of Cavill outside the Superman suit, you can catch him in Argylle and Enola Holmes 2. Both movies are set to release before the end of the year.
