Henry Cavill’s Superman Return Already In Trouble?

Henry Cavill's deal to return as Superman is not in place, nor is there any movement on his potential new movie.

The world was ecstatic when it had been announced that Henry Cavill would be returning as Superman for DC, but now there is some not-so-great news that could throw a wrench in his long-awaited comeback. Industry insiders close to the situation have reported that Cavill’s overall deal to return for the many Superman projects is currently not in place at all, and no writer or director is attached for this new story, which refutes previous reports that the DC Films division was beginning to hear pitches about a potential new movie.

There appears to be no forward movement at all regarding Henry Cavill coming back as Superman for the DC Cinematic Universe. However, before people start calling for the DC head honchos to be fired, co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently working on their long-term plan for the overarching future DC plan. This could mean that current projects are on hold until a clear and concise plan is put together by the pair. We also highly doubt that Black Adam would bring Cavill back in a huge cameo, only for that cameo to go to waste.

Still, we do understand the hesitation in wanting to believe anything going on behind closed doors at Warner Bros. Discovery. CEO David Zaslav did cancel Batgirl, which was just about the biggest anticipated DC release in years, so it makes sense that seeing the trouble with Henry Cavill returning as Superman would spark plenty of worries. However, Cavill is one of the biggest stars in the world, and DC Films would be smart to do what it can to bring the man back in grand style.

While plenty of people are wanting Henry Cavill to return as Superman, it would be horrible if that didn’t come to fruition, especially considering he left behind his role as Geralt in The Witcher. We presume that he left the role and passed it to Liam Hemsworth because he would have more of an expanded role in DC, which would certainly take up a lot of his time. Cavill potentially losing out on both The Witcher and Superman roles would be devastating.

Again, right now might be the time to panic, but Henry Cavill’s return as Superman sure sounds like it could be in trouble. The most important thing would be to work out this deal for the man to remain in DC. The same happened for Tom Holland and Marvel, regarding his Spider-Man future, and Cavill would need to have an established deal in place.

It always takes time to make movies, but if Henry Cavill signed an exclusive deal to stay portraying Superman, then we could all patiently wait longer without having to feel dread about him never returning. James Gunn is a smart man and creator, so we do expect he would want to lock up Cavill soon.

For now, Henry Cavill did return as Superman in Black Adam, so that is a step in the right direction. While we will have to wait and see what kind of deal he gets, and the creators attached to the project, we can at least hope DC wouldn’t be foolish enough to waste such a huge cameo.
