Henry Cavill might not have a Man of Steel sequel in the works, but that isn’t stopping him from still donning the red cape and big “S” in other DC movies coming in the pipeline. He’s still very much entrenched as the character and there are no immediate plans to change that. In fact, it looks like he’s going to be appearing in even more DC films going forward. The latest rumor has it that his next time on screen as Superman will be in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be a sequel to Shazam! and will bring back the titular character to the screen. It’s not totally clear what Henry Cavill’s involvement will be in the film. It could be a major part of the plot or just a cameo appearance to keep the film entrenched in the DC Extended Universe.

This isn’t a huge surprise to have Henry Cavill actually involved in the franchise’s next film considering there was already a hat-tip to his character in the first movie. In the post-credits scene, Billy-as-Shazam sits down next to his foster brother and quasi-mentor at a lunch table. After having welched on his promise to give Freddy street credit by “knowing” Shazam, he brings along a special friend. That dude is Superman, but we only see the character from the neck down. It wasn’t actually Cavill playing the part, but the intention was clear. The two characters know each other in this world.

Before we get to a Shazam! sequel, which isn’t out until 2023 at the earliest, Henry Cavill is set to reprise his Superman role in the upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League. That’s going to hit HBO Max on March 18th as an extended, feature-length film. It will attempt to cure some of the ills of the original Justice League, hoping to maintain some of Snyder’s original vision. Cavill will, of course, be a major part of this. But after that, his presence in the DC Extended Universe is a little cloudy. There are no other confirmed plans for him to show up as Superman.

Shazam! was a somewhat surprising hit for Warner Bros and DC two years ago, adding a lighter feel in terms of script and plot than other movies we’ve seen from this group. It earned $366 million at the box office on an $80 million budget and scored great reviews from critics. It’s prompting the aforementioned Fury of the Gods sequel and also a spin-off in Black Adam which will star Dwayne Johnson in the titular role. There’s some chance Henry Cavill appears in both considering Superman has a comic book history with Black Adam as well.

Next up for Henry Cavill, outside of the DC movies, will be when Netflix’s The Witcher finally releases its second season. It’s been guaranteed an eight-episode run, but production has been delayed because of pandemic-related closings. Getting to play Clark Kent and Geralt of Rivia will have this dude up on-screen in major works for quite a bit into the future.
