Although fans were thrilled to hear that the mess over at comic-book-turned-film-juggernaut DC Studios would be assuaged by the hiring of James Gunn and Peter Safran as head execs, a new Instagram post is drumming up more questions than ever. The latest snafu was caused by none other than James Gunn, who, according to a post that he shared, which you can see below, was hired to write Superman: Legacy months before his studio takeover was solidified. With this new bit of information, fans are rather confused about what James Gunn’s plans for Superman actor Henry Cavill were and if the actor was originally going to be scrapped from the production.

In a Twitter thread, an unsure fan questioned James Gunn on his big reveal that he was attached to Superman: Legacy long before he and Safran stepped in at DC Studios. The question tossed at James Gunn surrounded what would or could have been a Henry Cavill-led Man of Steel 2, which many presumed was Superman: Legacy. In their post, the eager follower wanted Gunn to better spell out whether the production was planned as a separate project from Cavill’s tenure as the Man of Steel or if it would’ve filled the anticipated sequel’s place.

The confusion stems from the fact that following James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios takeover, they announced that they would be revamping Superman, ditching Henry Cavill, and telling a different story with a new actor. The reveal churned up a lot of speculation and anger from fans who were certain that Cavill would be back as the Last Son of Krypton, seeing as how he was given permission from the studio to announce his return. There’s also the massive amount of Cavill-as-Superman-hype that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson put out around the release of DC’s blockbuster Black Adam

Sticking to his guns and giving fans his side of the story, James Gunn said that Superman: Legacy was always going to be a project separate from a Henry Cavill-led Man of Steel 2. What was supposed to be a clarifier only further befuddled fans who believed that Superman: Legacy was the brainchild of Gunn, following his DC Studios takeover. At the same time, DC, unlike their rivals over at Marvel, is known for recasting their leading heroes over and over again, with Batman being portrayed by Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson in the last 11 years alone, meaning that there’s the possibility that Cavill was meant to appear as Superman in a separate movie from Superman: Legacy

Whatever the case may be, faithful fans are still looking for the answers owed to them about why there was so much hype and certainty surrounding Henry Cavill’s return to the Superman franchise only to be struck down in the following weeks. And, while long-time followers are no doubt excited for the upcoming mega-feature The Flash, as well as other highly-anticipated titles such as Joker: Folie à Deux and The Batman 2 on the way, James Gunn can certainly count on them not letting go of Henry Cavill’s future as the Man of Steel anytime soon.
