Henry Cavill is a man who has played quite a few iconic roles, not the least of which is his turn as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. However, his time with the series will be coming to an end after the upcoming third season and fans are not happy about it at all. So much so that there is currently a Change.org petition (via Movieweb) that has amassed over 200,000 signatures to bring him back to the role and replace the writers.

Henry Cavill took to Instagram to announce his retirement from The Witcher and wish Liam Hemsworth well, who will be taking over for Cavill in the fourth season as Geralt. Although the reviews for Netflix’s The Witcher have been pretty lukewarm, everyone is in agreement that Cavill is the perfect person to play Geralt. The announcement that he is being replaced has not sat well with the fanbase, with many viewers saying that would not tune in after Cavill completes his tenure.

If Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of the Witcher novels, has given his approval of Henry Cavill in the role. However, as the petition to bring Cavill back points out, many of the writers of The Witcher series aren’t the biggest fans of the source material. This has led to rumors that Cavill is actually leaving the show over creative differences instead of obligations for other projects.

It was recently confirmed that Henry Cavill would be returning to the DC Films universe as Superman. Not only did Cavill himself confirm the news, but he appeared in the post-credits sequence of Black Adam, showing the world that Superman is indeed back. Presumably, Cavill will have a lot of new projects in the work as Superman, so it was assumed that he may be leaving The Witcher due to filming time constraints.

At the same time, Henry Cavill has been a very vocal fan of the Witcher franchise, indicating that Geralt was something of a dream role for him. If this is true, it does seem a little fishy that Cavill would just up and leave a character he has longed to play. It would make sense if there were some behind-the-scenes creative differences causing him to leave the series behind.

No matter what, we’ll at least get to see Henry Cavill return as Geralt one more time in The Witcher Season 3. Hopefully, they’ll be able to end things on a satisfying note for Cavill. Or maybe they’ll cave to fan pressure and bring Cavill back, but with Liam Hemsworth’s casting already announced, it seems a little unlikely at this point.

Henry Cavill will return for his final season as Geralt in 2023. In the meantime, you can see Cavill return as another iconic character in Netflix’s Enola Holmes 2. Enola Holmes 2 is currently streaming and sees Millie Bobby Brown return as a detective-for-hire and younger sister of Sherlock Holmes (Cavill) who needs to work with her brother when a missing girl case turns into a dangerous conspiracy.
