In 2022, the world was, perhaps, not ready for a Roland Emmerich film about the moon being a massive alien superstructure aimed at destroying the earth — even one featuring a beloved superstar such as Halle Berry. The movie was a complete box office bomb, making only $67 million on a $140 million budget. But the world seems ready for it now, since FlixPatrol shows that Moonfall is topping the U.S. streaming charts on HBO Max.

The film, which hit the top of HBO Max’s streaming charts at the beginning of February, disappeared from the rankings soon after. However, on February 28, the Halle Berry movie suddenly hit #8 on FlixPatrol’s charts, raising slowly to #4 on March 2 and March 3. The exact reason for its sudden bump in viewership isn’t clear.

It isn’t just Americans who have been enjoying Halle Berry’s performance in the absurd, over-the-top disaster flick. FlixPatrol also shows the movie being popular in Turkey on the Google Play store. Germany and Austria also seem fascinated with the film, as both countries have it ranked the seventh or eighth most-popular film on the digital rental site Chili.

The film, which stars Halle Berry as astronaut Jocinda Fowler, centers around a swarm of alien technology that forces the moon out of orbit, causing it to fall toward the earth. The film, whose plot pretty much just exists as an excuse to show massive scenes of destruction a la Roland Emmerich’s previous works 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow, was widely derided by critics for being just plain stupid. The minority of critics who liked the film reveled in its absurdity, but most felt that the humor to be found in the nonsensical plot wasn’t enough to make the film worth watching.

Alongside Halle Berry, the film features John Bradley as the not-so-crazy conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman, who correctly deduces that the moon is an artificial superstructure and causes worldwide panic by spreading the news to the media. Bradley is best known for playing Samwell Tarly, steward in the Night’s Watch, in HBO’s Game of Thrones

The film seems like a waste of talent for the Academy Award-winning Halle Berry, who took home the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002 for her performance in the romantic drama Monster’s Ball. However, the actress has starred in her fair share of over-the-top, lighthearted roles over the years. These roles range from playing storm in Brian Singer’s well-received X-Men films to playing Catwoman in the much-reviled 2004 film Catwoman

While Moonfall is Halle Berry’s most recent movie, she also starred in the self-directed 2020 Sports Drama Bruised, playing a disgraced MMA fighter who finds redemption in an out of the ring. Before that, she appeared in 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, and in 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Thankfully for the 56-year-old Halle Berry, Moonfall is far from the last film she’s going to appear in. She is set to appear this year in the Netflix sci-fi adventure movie The Mothership. She also will appear in the action thriller Our Man from Jersey and the horror thriller Motherland, neither of which have a set release date.
