Gaming fans might have gotten their hopes up after a tease from Guillermo del Toro at The Game Awards of something allegedly related to a new Silent Hill game, only to have their hopes extinguished by the filmmaker himself. Disappointingly, Guillermo del Toro isn’t working on the next Silent Hill game or any other video game for that matter.

Guillermo del Toro negated his involvement in any Silent Hill-related projects in his recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, as reported by GameSpot. The Mexican film director spoke out of genuine frustration regarding his and Hideo Kojima’s collaboration, the Silent Hills video game, which was unceremoniously canceled by Konami. For those in need of more context, Hideo Kojima introduced del Toro’s new film, Nightmare Alley, via a conference video call at The Game Awards, while del Toro spoke fondly of the Silent Hill gaming series, stating that he’d like to see a new game in the horror franchise.

As per his own accord, his teasing at The Game Awards was simply means of tickling Konami’s ribs due to his disappointment over the treatment of his and Kojima’s project. However, Guillermo del Toro did speak of P.T., a Silent Hills playable teaser that was released in 2014 and became an instant sensation with the fandom. Unfortunately, despite the teaser’s success, the game it was teasing was canceled, never to see the light of day, while the playable teaser was removed from the PlayStation Store by Konami.

Besides firmly denying involvement in any new Silent Hill project, Guillermo del Toro also shut down any possibility of working on another game, calling himself an “albatross” of gaming, most likely due to the fact that all of the game’s he tried to develop got canceled. He did, however, point out that gaming “as a storytelling exercise” fascinates him, though he did leave his mark on the industry, thanks to his friendship with Hideo Kojima. The film director had a small role in 2019’s Death Stranding — a massively successful gaming title created by Hideo Kojima. It’s worth noting that Death Stranding recently had a Director’s Cut released on PS5 — which has new faceplates — and a potential sequel might be in development. Hopefully, we’ll get to see del Toro in the Death Stranding sequel, once that finally gets a release.

As far as the Silent Hill gaming series goes, a new game might be in development, though nothing is officially confirmed. Konami is currently collaborating with its internal and external developers on several remasters and remakes of popular gaming titles, such as Metal Gear Solid and the Castlevania series. Rumors and speculation have been swirling for years regarding Silent Hills games, mostly fueled by the fandoms’ desire for a new game in the series, but there weren’t any official announcements yet. In the meantime, del Toro’s game Insane, birthed by his collaboration with THQ, was also canceled, while Silent Hill creator, Keiichiro Toyama, presented his newest game, called Slitterhead, during The Game Awards reveals.
