See The First Look At Gizmo In The Gremlins TV Series
Check out the first look at Gizmo in the upcoming animated Gremlins series that is coming soon to streaming on HBO Max.
HBO Max isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. The streamer has already had huge success with Peacemaker this year and hopes to have more with Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The upcoming series is an animated prequel to the beloved 1984 film Gremlins and as reported by CBR.com, fans have been given their first glimpse of central character Gizmo.
Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, is a ten-part, half-hour per episode series co-produced by Warner Bros Animation and Amblin Entertainment. The show is set to premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 13. Attending the premiere will be executive producers Tze Chun and Brendan Hay, along with Joe Dante, director of the Gremlins films. Dante is serving as a consulting producer on the project, which will serve as a good sign to fans of the original films. Joining Gizmo in the project are Ming-Na Wen, B.D. Wong, James Hong, Matthew Rhys, Izaac Wang, A.J. LoCascio and Gabrielle Green.
Variety reported the synopsis of the prequel series in addition to a cast announcement. Secrets of the Mogwai is set in 1920s Shanghai and centers on Sam Wing, a young man who will later grow up to be shop owner, Mr. Wing, in the original Gremlins movie. Sam Wing meets the young Mogwai named Gizmo and the pair form a kinship. Wing endeavors to help return Gizmo to his family, but there will be twists and turns along the way as the pair are forced to confront several beasts of Chinese folklore. Along with airing on HBO Max, the show is also set to air on Cartoon Network. Check out the first look at Gizmo.
This last fact could mean that Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, might be a tad more kid-friendly than the Gremlins of 1984. In the original when a Mogwai is purchased as a gift, it comes with a warning, never expose to bright light or water, and never feed them after midnight. In true cinematic fashion, these guidelines are broken, which causes the Mogwai to transform into the sinister Gremlins and begin to reak havoc. The synopsis of the 1984 film most definitely reveals a different tone to that of the upcoming animated prequel, which looks set to be a much more lighthearted affair.
For HBO Max, hopefully, the expected lighter nature of Secrets of the Mogwai pays off and becomes another successful hit for the streamer. HBO Max has a busy rest of 2022 ahead with the likes of the Batgirl movie, which will see the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman this December. It would seem that a common thread here is 80’s nostalgia, as Gremlins and Tim Burton’s Batman were defining films of that decade.
HBO will be hoping that is what helps to draw audiences into both projects. As for Gizmo and the Gremlins prequel, their premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival will see them fight for attention against Minions. Minions: The Rise of Gru is set to open the festival, and Gizmo will struggle to find harder competition than the instantly recognizable yellow oddballs that are the Minions.
