Grant Gustin has sped most of the way through the seventh season of The Flash on the CW with more stories to come in the future. The show isn’t going anywhere and has been one of the hits for the Arrowverse over the last many years. But this season will be the end of the line for a couple of the show’s original characters. Deadline is reporting that Tom Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes will be leaving the show and we are going to get final goodbyes to both before this season wraps up its stories.

On The Flash, Tom Cavanagh started off playing Harrison Wells, the genius behind S.T.A.R. Labs. But it’s been revealed over the seasons that there is much more than meets the eye with this guy. Cavanagh has played a number of different iterations of the character who turns out to be a being from the future (Eobard Thawne) who helps Grant Gustin as Barry Allen through a number of different predicaments. Over the years he’s been something of a fan favorite whose character has become more layered and integral to the story. But it looks like his storyline, from a recurring part of the main cast, will be coming to an end here when the season wraps.

Meanwhile, Carlos Valdes has also been with Grant Gustin since the beginning of the show as well. He’s played Cisco Roman who also works at S.T.A.R. Labs. Much like Cavanagh’s Wells and something of a theme for The Flash throughout its seven-season run, Valdes wore a number of different hats as the character. With varying timelines within the show, Valdes also saw a number of iterations but was mainly Roman who was there to help Barry when there was some advanced technical need. His character also doubled as the hero Vibe who can control sonic waves and, like the name implies, vibrations.

The Flash and Grant Gustin are currently in the middle of their seventh season which saw some starts and stops because of Covid-19 and pandemic-related delays in production. That meant some altering of the originally planned storyline and part of this Deadline announcement had it that Cavanagh was actually supposed to have closed out his storyline after season six. But that didn’t happen and he’s had some part in this current run.

It appears that though Cavanagh and Valdes are leaving the show as two of only five original cast members, the split appears amicable. There doesn’t appear to be animosity from either and it just likely means these particular characters have run their course within the current storylines. They just aren’t part of the plans for the eighth season. In addition to Grant Gustin, the other original cast members remaining will be Candice Patton as Iris West-Allen, Barry’s wife, and Danielle Panabaker as Caitlyn Snow/ Killer Frost.

Grant Gustin isn’t done with Season 7 of The Flash yet with a few more episodes and a couple of more twists on the way. But they’ve already firmed up a commitment for the eighth season so we know there are more stories for this character in the Arrowverse. But it will now be without Cavanagh and Valdes, two of the show’s mainstays throughout the years.
