The Russo Brothers have their next big project with a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid series at Amazon Studios. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new untitled series will star The Gray Man‘s Rege-Jean Page and Top Gun: Maverick‘s Glen Powell as the iconic duo. The reports indicate Page will be playing Cassidy with Powell playing the Sundance Kid.

While the series will draw inspiration from the iconic Oscar-winning Western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid from 1969, it’s supposedly set to take place in an alternate American history. It’s unclear how history will be altered in this new spin on the tale, but Rege-Jean Page and Glen Powell seem like solid choices to replace Paul Newman and Robert Redford in the iconic roles. There isn’t a ton more details about the Russo Brothers-produced series at this time, but it is confirmed that Ryan and Kaz Firpo (Eternals) are writing the series.

Apparently, the new Butch and Sundance series was ideated by the Russos and their company AGBO during production on The Gray Man, at which time they brought in Rege-Jean Page to talk about the project. AGBO’s board suggested Glen Powell take on the other lead role. In addition to starring in the series, Page and Powell will also be on board as executive producers

The famous 1969 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Newman and Redford managed to rake in four Oscars and get itself in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. If Rege-Jean Page, Glen Powell, and the Russos can recapture some of that magic, there could definitely be some Emmy awards in store for the future. Page got an Emmy nod for his work on Bridgerton at the 2021 Emmys, so it’s certainly possible he could take home the win for playing the legendary train-robbing outlaw Butch Cassidy.

The Butch and Sundance series will be another solid project for Rege-Jean Page, whose star only continues to rise. Along with his role in The Gray Man, he’ll be co-starring with Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant in Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. This blockbuster should be one of his biggest roles yet and it comes out on March 3, 2023.

Glen Powell has had quite the year too. The actor starred in the massive hit Top Gun: Maverick, which quickly became the highest-grossing release of the year so far. The record-breaking Top Gun: Maverick soared past $1 billion earlier this year, so Powell should definitely expect some more high-profile roles to be coming this way.

Glen Powell will be taking to the skies again soon with his upcoming film Devotion. Devotion features Powell and Jonathan Majors as two U.S. Navy fighter pilots who put their lives on the line during the Korean War. You can check out Devotion when it releases on November 23.

The Butch and Sundance Amazon series is still in the early stages, so details are going to be scarce at this point. Presumably, the series will announce more cast members and a director soon enough. Stay tuned for more information on this series and other projects from Rege-Jean Page and Glen Powell.
