Popular crime drama The Cleaning Lady has been renewed for a second season on Fox. The news comes as no surprise since the series made the network’s top-five list for the 2021/2022 season. When the Élodie Yung starrer premiered early this year, it earned a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demo and 3.56 million viewers in Live+Same Day. It also marked Fox’s highest-rated drama debut in two years as well as Hulu’s most-streamed Fox debut in the network’s history, according to Deadline.

Viewership numbers for The Cleaning Lady’s season finale were slightly down at 2.82 million. But the episode still managed a series high in Live+3 Day streaming, with more than 900,000 additional viewers in Live+3 Day viewing across Hulu and Fox Now. Speaking about the renewal, President of Fox Entertainment Michael Fox was not surprised that the heart-pounding, emotionally driven story managed to captivate viewers across all platforms.

Fox added that The Cleaning Lady bravely and unapologetically takes on many of society’s most important social issues, which is a trait the network has prided itself on for a long time. And all of it is brought into clear perspective by the powerful performance of The Cleaning Lady’s lead star, Élodie Yung, and the entire cast. With audiences having embraced this story and fans can now look forward to finding out what comes next for the devoted mother and her son when the show returns.

Based on the 2017 Argentinian television series La Chica Que Limpia, The Cleaning Lady was developed for Fox by Miranda Kwok. The story follows Thony De La Rosa, a whip-smart Cambodian-Filipino doctor who is living and working in Las Vegas. When her visa expires, she chooses to remain in the United States seeking medical treatment for her five-year-old son. Sadly, the immigrations system fails and forces her into hiding, Thony works as a cleaning lady alongside her sister-in-law.

Things take an even darker turn when Thony accidentally witnesses a horrible crime and is found hiding by the perpetrator. Refusing to be marginalized and beaten down, she offers her services as a cleaner and doctor to the crime boss. Having crossed into a moral gray zone, Thony starts to live a double life. She’s keeping secrets from her family, cleaning up murder scenes, and dodging the law. All the while, hoping her new gig as The Cleaning Lady will help to pay for her son’s medical bills.

During The Cleaning Lady’s season finale, Thony successfully got out of some legal troubles with the FBI and gained access to the syndicate’s substantial finances. But later, she discovered that Marco had left Las Vegas with Luca in tow. In an interview with TV Line, executive producer Melissa Carter hinted that Thony’s fight to get Luca back will be explored in season two. And the writing team has some exciting things planned for how she’s going to do it. Will the desperate mother use her contacts within the FBI or the criminal world? Or will she just take on the task by herself?

Starring alongside Yung in The Cleaning Lady is a stellar cast that includes Adan Canto, Oliver Hudson, Martha Millan, Jay Mohr, Liza Weil, and Shiva Negar. The series was developed by executive producer Miranda Kwok and executive-produced by showrunner Melissa Carter (of Queen Sugar fame), and executive producers Shay Mitchell, David Dean Portelli, Rose Marie Vega, and Paola Suarez. It was created in partnership between Fox Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television.
