The god of lies will soon be hanging out with the Merc with a Mouth. Our trusted and proven sources have let us know that Tom Hiddleston has joined the cast of the upcoming Deadpool 3, presumably as the trickster god Loki. With so little yet to be revealed about the plot of the threequel, we’re not sure exactly what part Loki will play in the film but we’ve got some intriguing ideas.

As anyone who has watched Disney+’s Loki is well aware, the son of Odin’s journey has brought him to the Time Variance Authority (TVA) where, in the inaugural season, he takes part in a cataclysmic series of events which lead to the “Sacred Timeline” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe transforming into a Multiverse. Ever since the events of Loki, the alternate universes that are now a part of the MCU have played major parts in Marvel projects like What If…?, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This, there’s a good chance, is exactly why Tom Hiddleston is showing up in Deadpool 3.

The key here is that we know that Hugh Jackman will also show up in the threequel; once more in the role of Wolverine, and among the very sparse details that have been shared is the assurance that Deadpool 3 takes place before the events of 2017’s Logan. This suggests that, rather than retconning things to make the narrative of the Fox X-Men movies somehow a part of the MCU, that the film will see Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool travel from his slice of the Multiverse into the Earth-616 MCU timeline. And for that, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki could be absolutely integral to Deadpool 3.

It’s also worth remembering that the resolution of Deadpool 2 would make Wade Wilson exactly the kind of person the TVA would target in Loki‘s first season. In a series of hilarious and often bloody mid-credits scenes, Deadpool alters time in multiple ways including preventing the death of his beloved Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). In fact, time travel is wrapped up in the very premise of the story, with Josh Brolin‘s Cable traveling back in time to kill Firefist (Julian Dennison) before he can grow up and murder Cable’s family in the future.

Tom Hiddleston’s presence in Deadpool 3 could also offer another unique and potentially controversial opportunity. Wade Wilson is pansexual in the source materials, and–as reported by ScreenRant in 2018–Ryan Reynolds has been vocal about wanting to explore that side of the character on the big screen. Meanwhile, in a conversation between the titular god of lies and his variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) in Loki Season 1, he became the first MCU character to openly admit to being bisexual. Does this mean Deadpool 3 could give us a Deadpool/Loki romance?

It’s possible we could know more next year. While we won’t see Tom Hiddleston or anyone else in Deadpool 3 until November 8, 2024, the second season of Loki is expected to arrive on Disney+ sometime in the middle of 2023. Could Reynolds make an appearance in the series?
