Marvel and DC have been fighting over Ryan Gosling for years. Before Benedict Cumberbatch took on the role, Gosling was wanted for Doctor Strange. Around that same time, DC wanted him to join Will Smith and Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad. It later came out that DC wanted him to play Joker. He turned it down at the time because the studio insisted on a multi-picture deal and the actor wouldn’t budge. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be interested in a comic book movie, though. In a similar vein, he’s currently working on a Wolfman movie with Universal. Now, a trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot has shared that Ryan Gosling is in talks with DC for a new role.

With the long history between DC and Ryan Gosling, there’s hope that this time around, the studio has a better idea of what he’ll be interested in. Since they offered him Joker in the past, it seems likely that they’re willing to offer him very interesting and unique characters. Unfortunately, we were unable to confirm what character they’re offering him this time around. After the success of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, it’s entirely possible that they’re offering him a character in the next James Gunn project for DC. Actors have been swayed by the promise of working on some of his projects in the past, and it could be that such a project would have more room for Ryan Gosling to sign a contract for only one movie.

Previously, Giant Freakin Robot exclusively reported that Ryan Gosling was in talks to star as Ken in the upcoming Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie. It has since been confirmed that he took on that role. Margot Robbie plays Harley Quinn for DC and was last seen in The Suicide Squad. It wouldn’t be surprising to learn that Robbie and Gosling are talking about working together again on a future DC project. If he’s enjoying working with Margot Robbie, it would make sense that he’d be more open to working with her again, perhaps on another The Suicide Squad project with James Gunn. Maybe Margot Robbie will be able to help sway him where DC has failed in the past.

Movies like Blade Runner 2049 have been huge hits for the actor. He hasn’t shied away from franchises exactly. Ryan Gosling doesn’t seem afraid of big roles. He does seem afraid of contracts that could limit his freedom to sign up for future work. Ryan Gosling doesn’t seem to be a sequel kind of guy, even as franchises have become an important choice for many of the biggest actors in Hollywood.

Considering that DC knows how talks went with Ryan Gosling the last time around, hopefully, they’re coming to him now with a role that is still just as interesting but one that will only require a contract for one movie. This doesn’t seem like it will be the hold-up for the DC Cinematic Universe that it would be for Marvel. DC had a very successful solo movie with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. They’ve been willing to split off from the DC Extended Universe to make Robert Pattinson’s The Batman. It seems very likely that at this point DC knows they have to offer Ryan Gosling a one-movie contract if they want to work with him. It’ll be interesting to see if it works out this time, and if it will be for a solo movie that breaks off from the DC Extended Universe, or if he joins a large ensemble in a one movie deal.
