These days, the comic book movie has become such a constant in our cinema lives that the big studios are now able to attract some of the brightest names for stories in this universe. It’s a testament to just how pervasive this genre has become and how much great work has been done in the comic book movie world, from Marvel especially. It looks like they are bringing in another great talent to work on a film. The latest Giant Freakin Robot exclusive has it, from our trusted and proven source, that Kevin Feige is setting his sights on one of the best directors out there and wants Rian Johnson to helm a Marvel film sooner than later.

With so many big projects coming down the pike in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s easy to see why they’d want to set their sights on acclaimed talents to sit in the directors’ chairs. This is a franchise that, amazingly, is still in growth mode even though they’ve been at it for more than a decade now. Adding Rian Johnson to the mix would be yet another fantastic move from the studio with the latter able to handle a couple of things Marvel has done well so far. Namely, combine intense action and storytelling gravity with doses of humor that remind us movies are meant to be fun after all. Johnson has a knack for this kind of thing, pulling it off in some of his previous work.

It’s not totally clear what movie Marvel head Kevin Feige has in mind for Rian Johnson, but the latter would clearly be a welcome addition to this universe. With Marvel now having access to the entirety of the character catalog, we know all kinds of projects are on the way for the MCU. There are characters like Ghost Rider and all of the X-Men who will work their way into the universe over the next many years. Locking in acclaimed directors to take over these stories is crucial, especially considering the weight of expectation around getting things right the first time with these folks. In this way, Rian Johnson would be a great addition.

And Rian Johnson has already been a part of one of the biggest movie franchises out there, one under the Disney banner to boot. He helmed Star Wars: The Last Jedi which was the second film in the sequel trilogy for that franchise. It was a fantastic flick, maybe the best in that group that dealt with some heavy themes around legacy and family while also keeping things in line with the rest of the Star Wars brand. Was a lot of it undone by what went down in The Rise of Skywalker? Sure, but that wasn’t Johnson’s fault.

And Rian Johnson also has another budding franchise going as well, a rather unexpected one all things considered. That’s because Knives Out was such a hit with its ensemble cast the first time around that there are more movies coming under the banner. Rian Johnson is gathering another group for a sequel, bringing back Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc for at least two more films around varying mysteries. After gathering a veritable who’s who the first time around, Rian Johnson has folks like Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Jessica Henwick, Dave Bautista, and Kathryn Hahn lined up for the sequel.
