One of the most exciting moments of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was seeing Sir Patrick Stewart reprise his role as Professor Xavier. Even though he was a different timeline version of the character, and was mercilessly killed by the Scarlet Witch, it let fans of the MCU know that mutants are certainly going to be part of Marvel. Fans have been clamoring for the X-Men to make their debut, and that might be happening quite soon. However, through our trusted and proven sources, we can report that Ian McKellen will be returning in Secret Wars as Magneto.

The new Marvel film will be Avengers: Secret Wars and is now going to at least involve Ian McKellen. The consensus is that Marvel will be using elements from the Johnathan Hickman-written Secret Wars from 2015, which sees the destruction of the multiverse. Considering that the MCU is completely comprised of multiversal storylines, it would make sense that this is the direction that is being taken. When the multiverse is destroyed, Dr. Doom then creates another world that is populated by many different variants of popular Marvel characters. We would assume that McKellen is going to be another version of Magneto, and he could be joined by the Michael Fassbender version too.

Ian McKellen appearing in Secret Wars is quite exciting, as the man has not played Magneto since 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Though we all assumed the man would be done with the role, we are more than excited that he is going to be returning to one of his most iconic characters. This news also indicates that we could be seeing more of the Fox-based X-Men make their appearances in the MCU, even if only briefly. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine for a small cameo would make everyone go quite nuts. Us included. This is just speculation but considering Secret Wars does bring in different timelines versions of characters, we might be seeing some of our favorite casted Marvel heroes return.

Unfortunately, we aren’t going to see Ian McKellen return in Secret Wars for another three years. Considering the scope of the event in the comics, and what is likely to happen on the big screen, this movie is going to take some time to make. Still, it is exciting to think about the other cameos that might be happening. Also, will Magento switch to help the cause and attempt to stop Doctor Doom? This is assuming that Doctor Doom is going to be Marvel’s next big baddie after Kang. It has been heavily rumored, and with Fantastic Four being announced, it could be coming to fruition.

Ian McKellen returning in Secret Wars could also mean that Patrick Stewart might return as Professor Xavier again. One of his timelines versions was murdered, but it would be a sweet send-off to have both men meet one last time within the MCU. They could be enemies turned compatriots one final time. Make this happen, Marvel.
