On Monday, Henry Cavill made it official that he was back in the role of Superman for more than just his cameo in Black Adam. Now our trusted and proven sources have gotten more specific; telling us Cavill has signed a deal to appear in Black Adam 2, Justice League 2, and Man of Steel 2.

Of the three films, arguably most significant is the news regarding Man of Steel 2. This will mean Henry Cavill’s first appearance as Superman as the sole male lead since 2013’s Man of Steel. Considering there’s been no official word about production or a release date, the flick will almost certainly not arrive until 2024 at the earliest; making the sequel Cavill’s first time as Superman in a solo film in over a decade.

With this news coming to light within hours of the official announcement that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn will be co-heading DC Studios with Peter Safran lends credence to report that it will be Gunn helming Man of Steel 2. If true, Henry Cavill’s next solo appearance as Superman will mark the second time Gunn has picked up a dormant DC property and directed a follow-up. He wrote and directed 2021’s The Suicide Squad, and later spun the hit HBO Max series Peacemaker out of it.

Gunn has done a lot to earn his beloved status among superhero movie fandom, though should he truly be directing Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel 2, he may find himself tackling a new challenge. In previous superhero screen projects like the Guardians of the Galaxy series, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and even the 2010 dark comedy Super; Gunn has dealt with underdog characters far outside the norm.

Henry Cavill–or any actor–as Superman, on the other hand, is the superhero gold standard. Gunn may find himself either testing his range as a storyteller, or trying to fit the proverbial square peg into a round hole.

The word from our sources also seems to confirm that we will–as Dwayne Johnson has promised–see an epic showdown between Kal-El and Teth Adam, and that it will unfold in Black Adam 2. Assuming the first film keeps breaking box office records, that sequel will be a no-brainer for Warner Bros. Discovery. The film gave Johnson his biggest opening weekend ever ($67 million) and according to Box Office Mojo, as of Wednesday Black Adam has earned over $80 million more since the weekend.

Perhaps the most interesting part of our sources’ report is that a Justice League 2 is on the way, considering the controversy that still surrounds the first film. There’s also the question of exactly who will be part of the eponymous team besides Henry Cavill. Jason Momoa and Gal Gadot would seem likely candidates, but–for very different reasons–the returns of Ezra Miller and Ben Affleck would seem to come with much bigger question marks.

We might also see Ray Fisher return as Cyborg. The actor celebrated Walter Hamada’s departure from DC Films, and hinted he might return to the superhero cinematic universe.
