Just as the world is calming down from the confirmation of Hugh Jackman’s return to the role of Wolverine, the follow-up has been secured. Our trusted and proven sources tell us that Marvel Studios has already given the go-ahead for Deadpool 4 and that Ryan Reynolds is officially on board for a fourth film. Additionally, our sources inform us that Deadpool 4 will come after Avengers: Secret Wars, and that it will mark the beginning of whatever next saga Marvel Studios architect Kevin Feige has in mind.

The word that Deadpool 4 is on the way with Ryan Reynolds attached isn’t that much of a shocker. While there’s still very little known about the upcoming Deadpool 3, Jackman’s return alone just about ensures a good return on Marvel‘s investment. Unless the film turns out to be nothing but two hours of Wade Wilson and Logan learning ballet, Deadpool 3 is bound to make a killing.

At the risk of sounding cliche, Reynolds isn’t getting any younger. With Deadpool 4 coming out after Secret Wars, by the time it hits theaters Ryan Reynolds will be–at the very least–49 years old. While examples like Harrison Ford may be inspiring, in most likelihood Reynolds only has so much time left to play Wade Wilson.

What’s much more interesting is the news that, with Deadpool 4, Ryan Reynolds will help kick off the next big Marvel Studios saga. In spite of the usual PG-13 content of the MCU, Kevin Feige has previously confirmed, as reported by Collider, that Deadpool 3 will be an R-rated affair. If we assume the same will be true for Deadpool 4, it would seem like a natural move for the films in the series to keep as isolated as possible from the rest of the MCU so as not to hurt the integrity of the studio’s overall family friendly brand.

It could be a signal of significant change in the MCU as far as more adult content is concerned, and if so it isn’t the only sign we’ve seen in the past couple of years. Eternals gave us the MCU’s first sex scene and both recently released and upcoming projects–like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the Werewolf by Night special–have brought more horror related content to the narrative. You can add to that the addition of the former Netflix series like The Punisher and Jessica Jones to Disney+, and at least one of those series–Daredevil–having a revival greenlit.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool

Arguably the biggest challenge Deadpool 4 will face is to somehow follow up the reunion of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as their signature superheroes. Not counting the brief shots from X-Men Origins: Wolverine included in Deadpool 2‘s mid-credits, Deadpool 3 will be only the second R-rated movie to feature Jackman as Wolverine. The other movie is Logan, and for much of that film the eponymous hero is too sick to fight effectively.

In other words, Deadpool 3 will gives us the first chance to see a relatively young and healthy Wolverine without PG-13 content restrictions. Whatever Deadpool 4 and Ryan Reynolds have in store as a follow up, it better be good.
