When Eternals hits the screen for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will offer a new look for the franchise, diverging away significantly from the Avengers-led ramp-up we’ve seen through the first three phases of the MCU. This new story will begin a different path with characters who’ve long existed mostly out of the confines of the standard superhero story arcs. For Marvel, this begins a way to move into a totally different world. And now we have our first true look at the Eternals trailer. Frankly, it looks magnificent.

Posted by Marvel Studios early on Monday, the Eternals trailer begins to give us some background on this group, understanding parts of their origin story but also the sense that they’ve been waiting in the wings for millennia on Earth. There’s simultaneously an ancient feel, but one of timelessness as well. This is purposeful considering the group, as a whole (and as the name would suggest) are immortal in their own right. They are part-gods who’ve come to Earth as protectors but are now being pressed into action. Take a look at the stunning Eternals trailer here:

The Eternals trailer starts in an ancient time with a ship (if you want to call it that) coming to Earth. Piloted by Gemma Chan as Sersi and Richard Madden as Ikaris, it’s clear they’ve come to the planet in peace, possibly for the beauty it provides. We get a sense that these folks are powerful, but benign, sent here to be protectors, not rulers.

And the Eternals trailer voiceover gives us this idea as well.  Salma Hayek as Ajax tells us that they’ve watched and guided those on Earth, watching them grow over thousands of years but not interfering. But that is about to change. Something will call the Eternals into action. And that’s where this movie looks like it really takes off.

According to the plot details, Eternals takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame and there’s the good possibility that the destruction Thanos put upon the planet and the universe was such that the group can no longer act as just watchers. They are now tasked with fulfilling another destiny. In the Eternals trailer, we see Sersi and Ikaris, but also Angelina Jolie as Thena, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, and many others.

The Eternals trailer doesn’t give a sense of what danger this group faces (though we have some idea) and looks like more of an origin story than anything else. It’s set to establish the group in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, moving them from peaceful overseers of the planet into a role in which they must interact with humankind. This will come in the form of protecting them from the Deviants, a group who’ve been at odds with the Celestials (another name for the Eternals) since the beginning of time.

If this Eternals trailer is any indication, director Chloe Zhao pulled out all the stops for her first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She is fresh off winning the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director at this year’s Academy Awards for the film Nomadland. Eternals represents a big bump up in budget, but it looks like she brings the same beauty to the screen, just this time around a new set of heroes. This trailer gives a sense that we could be seeing one of the best movies to hit the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet.
