Back in December, we shared the scoop that one of our trusted and proven sources had revealed that the star-studded Netflix hit Red Notice had multiple sequels greenlit. Today, our scoop has been confirmed. Dwayne Johnson will be returning to film multiple Red Notice sequels back-to-back, and he’s bringing some old friends with him.

The news comes from Deadline, who confirms today that Netflix is preparing to film Red Notice 2 and Red Notice 3 back-to-back. Dwayne Johnson is expected to return along with Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, and writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber. Assuming he’s writing and directing both sequels, they will make the third and fourth films Thurber has helmed with Johnson on board — the first being the 2018 action thriller Skyscraper. The streamer is reportedly hoping to get filming going by early 2023.

It seems likely this could be related to news that emerged at the end of 2021 that Dwayne Johnson was officially giving the thumbs down to appearing in three sequels, including one he was fully expected to return to. Johnson’s business and production partner Hiram Garcia said The Rock had passed on appearing in follow-ups to Journey 2: Mysterious Island, Rampage, and San Andreas — the latter of which he’d been expected to return to as recently as last summer. It could be that filming two sequels to Red Notice back-to-back has shifted his priorities.

Looking at the films already on Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming schedule, it should make Red Notice fans feel confident that the two upcoming sequels are worth the kind of schedule-shifting that will be necessary to make them happen. Johnson has talked in the past about he now chooses films based on what he calls the “Moses effect” — i.e. films enticing enough that he pushes other projects aside to make them fit. Considering what’s coming up for Johnson in the next few years and what’s expected of him — including collaborating with Robert Zemeckis on The King, remaking John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, the holiday action film Red One, potential future seasons of Young Rock, and potential sequels to who knows how many films (Jumanji, Moana, Black Adam, Hobbs & Shaw, Jungle Cruise, etc.) — it’s going to take quite bit of “Moses effect” to make room for two Red Notice sequels back-to-back.

Of course, it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that Dwayne Johnson and the rest are making time for Red Notice 2 and Red Notice 3. Less than a month after its premiere, Red Notice became the most watched movie in the history of Netflix, beating out Sandra Bullock’s 2018 post-apocalyptic horror hit Bird Box. Which is fitting, considering Red Notice also represents the most money the streamer has spent on a single original film.

While the franchise already includes the impressive star power of Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, Deadline’s report implies Netflix is looking to add more top-tier talent to the Red Notice sequels. The site says the streamer is hoping to form a new ensemble not unlike the cast of the popular Ocean’s Eleven franchise. We’re not sure exactly who Netflix is looking at, but considering everything, we’re pretty sure The Rock will blackball any Vin Diesel nominations.
