There’s a potential blockbuster coming out this summer that has Ryan Reynolds in the lead role. It’s been a long time coming, but we are finally going to get our eyes on Free Guy in the middle of August. And while the flick has garnered a fair amount of attention, it might be up for some more. That’s because apparently both Hugh Jackman and Dwayne Johnson have cameos in the film. The casting notes on 20th Century Studios website lists both guys near the end of the list. It’s probably the lowest either will ever rate among a group of actors for a film, but it could point to very small roles for the two.

It’s not totally clear how Dwayne Johnson and Hugh Jackman will factor into Free Guy as of right now with their appearance on the casting list coming off as a moderate surprise. The cameos are likely to stir up quite a bit of excitement where the movie is concerned considering the high profile nature of both guys. And there’s some chance we get a superhero reference or two in there. Could Jackman be making an appearance as some version of Wolverine? It’s possible. And of course, Dwayne Johnson cuts the look almost just on his own.

Hugh Jackman Wolverine

Free Guy is about a non-player character (NPC) guy living in a video game, not totally understanding that the world around him is full of all the trappings and action of your standard gaming fare. Ryan Reynolds plays Guy, a dude who starts off moderately clueless about his situation but slowly comes to realize the world around him is anything but ordinary. The concept is great and the flick looks like a ton of fun. Though neither Hugh Jackman or Dwayne Johnson appear in the first look, you can get a feel for the flick in this trailer:

With a moderate play on The Matrix in that Ryan Reynolds’ Guy character realizes he can control the world in some way, offering a chance to perform acts way outside the realm of human abilities, the flick looks like a hilarious approach to the world of video gaming. Guy is a more bland and assuming version of Neo in this sense, rallying together a resistance of sorts within the game that helps unite other NPCs in an effort to save their virtual world. Could he also be enlisting Dwayne Johnson and Hugh Jackman in the effort or do we see them more as actual hero characters within the game? The latter feels possible especially if they are coming on board as other on-screen personas.

We’ll have to wait to see how Dwayne Johnson and Hugh Jackman actually fit in and there were some other somewhat surprising names on the casting list. Tina Fey and John Krasinski were two other unexpected additions, listed right at the end. Their cameos aren’t known either but it’s clear this high-profile film had no problem getting others interested. Joining Ryan Reynolds in larger roles Jodie Comer as Molotov Girl, the person responsible for opening Guy’s eyes to his world. And there’s also Taika Waititi as the video game designer and architect, the antagonist who is trying to destroy the world.

Though the roles for Dwayne Johnson and Hugh Jackman are likely very small ones, both dudes are busy with other huge projects in their own right. Johnson is, of course, filming Black Adam, the highly-anticipated DC Film that will put him in the superhero costume for the first time in his career. And Hugh Jackman is set to release Reminiscence in August, a time travel/ memory alteration film that looks gorgeous from the first trailers.
