We are finally getting a good look at actor Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, his entry point to the comic book movie world. Warner Brothers has dropped what is essentially a sizzle reel of their upcoming 2022 DCEU projects, of which there are a lot. In a close to three minute clip shared on social media today, we get to see (among many, many other things) the once and future Rock as Shazam’s (Zachary Levi) nemesis Black Adam, who will be appearing in his own solo film this year. Around the 8-second mark, we can clearly see Johnson as Adam, wearing what is essentially a color-swapped version of Shazam’s red, white and gold costume, only in in a more sinister black and gold. There’s also shot of him in a long and billowing cape and Johnson grimly saying some words about “a better world,” but that costume is the real key here. Check it out here:

But Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam is only one piece of the DCEU counter strike to the cinematic dominance of the MCU. After several years of disappointing, disjointed attempts to create a shared universe in bald imitation of Kevin Feige’s vision for Marvel Studios, Warner Bros seems to have decided to just go for broke and throw a bunch of stuff out there. Aside from the upcoming Black Adam film, 2022 will also have Jason Momoa in the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the long-delayed The Flash film with Ezra Miller and Michael Keaton returning to his iconic Batman role (as well as Ben Affleck in reportedly his last appearance as Batman), and the Robert Pattinson-led The Batman, which will co-star Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Ferrell as The Penguin and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman. For those keeping count, that’s three separate Batmans (Batmen?) in one year, which has to be some kind of record.

None of that is even counting the upcoming Batgirl movie, the critically acclaimed Peacemaker show currently airing, a Gotham P.D. show reputedly to be helmed by Matt Reeves, and just a lot of DCEU stuff. Given that Dwayne Johnson is currently one of the biggest and busiest movie stars in the world, it is not surprising that they would lead with him as Black Adam in the supercut of DCEU projects. We also get some first glimpses of Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate/Kent Nelson and Noah Centineo as a colossal Atom-Smasher. While Zachary Levi is set to reprise his role as the age-challenged superhero Shazam in his own sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Black Adam will reportedly not show up in that. However, we do have word that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman is set to play a role in it, and naturally, she also has her own sequel Wonder Woman 3 coming out sometime in the future. 2022 is set to be the single biggest year of DC superhero projects, at least by sheer number and variety. And as the Fast and Furious franchise can attest, no one can juice up a flagging series like Dwayne Johnson.
